Title: Yankee/Diamondback trade- 11/17/26 12:42A
Post by: dennymcc23 on January 16, 2026, 11:42:01 PM
Yankees trade:
Trea Turner MI (PHI) $14m (2026), Emilio Pagan RP (CIN) $1m 2026),
Jacob Lopez SP (ATH) $1m (2027), Jett Williams MI,OF (NYM) $0.5m pc

Diamondbacks trade:
Jackson Holliday MI (BAL) $0.5m (2027), Trey Sweeney MI (DET) $0.5m (2028)
Welbyn Francisca MI  (CLE) $0.5m pc

Yankees worked with Dan to get potential young players that will play in the Bigs this coming season plus $$ savings. He gets 3 to my 2 with sharing pcs.

D-Backs agree.

I'll risk moving the likely future plus-player in Holliday for a "now" piece in Trea, along with two functional pitchers for this season, and a player who I am really high on, in Jett Williams.

I've got the cap room to add Trea, and hopefully keep him in the fold beyond 2026.

Thanks Denny!

D'Backs get:
T. Turner- 2025 #7 MI 22ppg. 20ppg for position players in this league is elite
E,Pagan- MLB closer 9.5ppg
J. Lopez- 39ppg 1.273 WHIP
J.Williams- Top 100 prospect

Yankees get:
J. Holiday- #33 MI 12.23ppg Hasn't lived up to his billing IMO
T. Sweeney 3.03ppg in a good sampling of 118 games
W. Francisca- Guardians' #15 prospect. Currently in A ball

D'Backs are taking on more salary but, if extended today, it would drop from $14 to $10M. Holiday's from $0.5 to $4M.  Closes the gap a little bit.
Yankees are losing 10ppg before you count the pitching he's giving up. Then throw in a Top 100 prospect?
I've given this a lot of thought, it just doesn't add up for me.  I have to veto.

approve.  I like the D-Backs side of the trade but it doesn't rise to a veto for me.

I will say mine was a reluctant approval, I?m not sure Matt Holiday would even make this trade as the Yankees, but I didn?t feel like it warranted a veto

He's giving up the #7 SS, a RP good for 9-1/2 ppg, a decent SP @ 39 ppg and a top 100 prospect for #33 SS @ 13 ppg and a single A prospect?
What does warrant a veto?

My reasoning was I think Turner is going to start to decline relative to what we are used to seeing from him. Pagan is a closer but I don?t think the Reds are going to be all that competitive this season and they still play in a hitter friendly park. A?s playing in a minor league park couple with Lopez pitching so poorly in his last start I was convinced he was going to be reveled to need TJ on that elbow. And Jett Williams is blocked currently so I don?t see him having any value barring a trade in the next 3 seasons.

-Turner went from the 19th rank in 2024 to 7th in 2925, Doesn't look like he's declining to me. He's 32 not 42.
-Pagan can pitch in a sandlot. It doesn't matter in our game. He pitched 81 games at GABP in 2025 and scored nearly 10 per game. His HR/IP actually improved last year over 2024. That's what matters.
-In 93 innings in 2025 Lopez only allowed 81 hits and 37BB while striking out 113. Take a look at our scoring system, those are very good numbers. Scored 40/game, it'll cost a whole lot more than his $1M contract to replace him. And, if you factor in pitcher injuries, none of them would ever get traded.
-As for Williams- You're saying that since he has no path to MLB right now he has the same value as another team's #15 prospect? I'll counter that with "If he truly is the #58 prospect in baseball they'll find a place for him"
You've got your opinion and I'm not interested in changing it. I just question how you arrived at it, is all.

Sorry for the delay, daughter had a basketball tournament.

Approve.  Both teams gave a good reasoning and I was not moved to think one side vastly outweighed the other.  I am not the highest of Holiday and I do believe Turner is going to take a step back before the end of this contract. But either way, no collusion and no issue.
