Yankees and Angels have agreed to the following trade:
Angels send:
CI Vinny Pasquantino (P-2025 $0.5m)
Yankees send:
SP Luis Castillo (2026 $8.0m)
X - 2025 $8.0m
X - 2026 $8.0m
Injuries are killing the Angels pitching staff, so we're dealing from a position of depth (and a Yankee need) to bring in another arm to keep us afloat.
Yankees to confirm - good dealing with you Denny.
-
We confirm this trade with my need for a regular CI Vinny fills the spot.
-
I assume X - 2025 $8.0m means that Yankees pay his salary in 2025 and 2026?
X - 2026 $8.0m

Correct

I don't really have an issue with the talent being exchanged. Pasquantino is off to an alright start (37th ranked CI in our league) but has a good pedigree. Castillo speaks for himself.
Both teams are filling a need but I would give the edge to the Angels.
If that was all there was to it I could approve this trade. However the fact that the Yankees are paying $16m to facilitate it puts it over the top for me. Sorry, I have to veto.

I understand your point of view. If the rest of the mods agree, we will renegotiate.
Just a couple of points to consider:
There is value in the prospect extension the Yankees are able to use on Pasquantino. They have 5.5 yrs of control over him vs 1.5 of Castillo. On the open market, Pasquantino should land a $10 - $12m AAV (using Nootbar as best comp for age and performance 4 yrs @$12m AAV). There's big long-term savings for the Yankees...if extended with current rankings, about $30 - 40m over the life of the extension, which alone is well worth the $16m to pay down Castillo's salary.
The injury risk on pitching is significant in my evaluation here. For context, I have 7 SP's on the IL right now (6 of those are due to TJS)...so I have a little PTSD when it comes to pitching and forces me to consider the range of outcomes.
My worst case scenario is Castillo blows out his elbow soon after I acquire him, taking him out of action thru this year and next. He's not back until he's a FA and I've given 5.5 yrs of Pasquantino away for nothing. Best case scenario is Castillo is the best SP in baseball, in which Pasquantino still likely outscores him this year and next and the Yankees still have him for 4 more years after Castillo becomes a FA.

i approve the trade. i have no problem with the contract being paid. both gms agree on it.
-
I approve the trade. The trade helps solve a positional need for both teams, and there's no evidence of collusion or anything else that would push me to veto the trade.

I understand Rick's concern here, but I don't think the added value of paying the contract tilts the trade enough to make it vetoable from my perspective. I agree with Jason's point about the extension.
His point about the injury possibility, while pitchers are far more susceptible (especially on his team :P) there is always risk inherent in every trade, so that point sways me very little.
I approve.
