Pro-rating salary for DL players to give GM's more cap flexibility when a player is injured.
Context:
TAC: So, since we already have a mechanism where cap defaults after the year, if we wanted to pro-rate IR cap space, it would just be done by raising cap space to accomodate for an injured player when they are on the IR.
The easiest way to do it would be to manually add cap space after a full week of someone on IR, but still count IR players against the cap. So, basically, it gets refunded.
Let's say deGrom, since he was who i brought up before: His salary is 37,000,000 for the season.
26.5 weeks in the season. so, 1,396,000 per week.
If he's on the IR for a week, you add 1,396,000 to the cap for that team. do that each week until he comes off.
Could very easily make a formula in Excel where you just figure out how much salary value a team had on the IR for the week, then have a formula calculate the amount of cap space to add. Then you could do each team in like... maybe 2-3 minutes each.
It would be even simpler if you say its specifically for longer term IR stints, like have it only be reimbursed if a player gets put on the 60-day. Because then you don't need to worry as much about compensating for 7-day concussion IR stints or anything like that. Also, it would only mean one lump adjustment for each player - if they go on the 60 day, you get 2 months of value of the contract back. So there's still a hit for having someone get injured, but its not necessarily destroying your roster since you have some cash to replace them.
Rob: Ok, I might be able to get my ahead around it if it's only the 60 day DL... That could be simplified down to a flat rate. Something like 20%. If you have a player hit the 60 Day DL you get a 20% discount on his contract for the season (in the form of a cap increase, as you say).
Although, maybe 40% is more accurate. Since our regular season is 5 months, 60 days is approx 40% of our season.

Review effectiveness of 78 IP limit

Discuss free drops of contracts under a certain threshold (less than $1M?)
-
discount hometown discounts for pending free agents and current free agents that actually play in our organizations
-
Discount on extensions for players coming off service time contracts

Not sure if this is how you want it done.
When I first signed up, I remember the prize money being split in a way that rewarded division winners. Maybe this isn't open for discussion, but I think it should be.
Winning your division means you built a strong team and managed it well throughout the season?through the draft, trades, roster moves, and all the ups and downs. That takes real effort. Plus, having a reward for the division crown keeps teams motivated to compete hard until the end, or at least longer into the season.
The playoffs, on the other hand, have a lot more to do with luck. They definitely should still mean something, but I feel like winning your division?which still has a bit of luck involved, especially since not all divisions are equal?is a big accomplishment and should be recognized as such. Thoughts?
For easy finding. Here is the current payouts. 2025 payouts expected:
Fantrax League Fee: $129.95
All 12 Playoff teams: $50 each
All 4 League Championship teams: $100 each
Both World Series teams: $200 each
Champion: $623.46

Also for the discussion on rules for next year, I think it would be good to have an extension deadline, and have it be prior to the trade deadline.
This would create more of a need for GMs to be strategic about players on expiring contracts, and will create a much more active deadline.
It will also encourage free agency more, as GMs can't manipulate the cap by doing a bunch of releases on the very last day of the season to clear up cap space and then sign someone on a last minute extension.

Discount on extensions for players coming off service time contracts
Strong disagree on this one. Service time players are already a massive value in this league since they get paid less than half of the actual MLB minimum, and getting cheaper extensions would make them crazy overvalued.
If anything, I would rather not allow extensions on service time players at all, or cap it for only players eligible for 10-15 million or less something. You get the studs for cheap years at 300k, but then they can't be extended. Kind of like how in actual MLB, the real studs almost always want to test the waters of free agency.

I think I agree with you. I do like encouraging organic growth. Hometown discounts help that. We offer prospect contract discounts in my NHL league, but our service time is only 3 years there.
In any case, we can debate this in the offseason.

Disagree on this, though. Kristian Campbell. Jackson Merrill.

Fair. But I?m really referring more to guys who are in their walk year, not guys who are still sitting on 5 or more years of service time. Soto, Ohtani, Burnes, very likely Tucker next year, etc

And he signed before what would be our extension deadline :)

I would like to propose that during the off-season, each team gets to release one bad contract, maybe two, and no more, free of charge.
-
One seems reasonable, but I don't think it should be completely free of charge. It should still come with a one year salary penalty, or a loss of a 4th/5th round draft pick or something.
-
Roster construction idea: Change two of the pitching roster spots from SP to P, allowing them to be used for a relief pitcher or a starting pitcher.
This will allow teams to have more of their bullpens available, rather than picking four on any given day and hoping they pick who happens to get used.

I wonder if this should be reserved for bottom 10 or 20 teams. Help with parity and help worse teams shed bad contracts faster and get them competitive sooner.
-
Since IR positions have no impact on cap, I wonder if we should just remove the IR limit. Not sure what the difference is of having 6 guys on the IR or 10, besides just making for dead roster spots if you get unlucky with injuries. Would match MLB more, as there is no limit on IR slots in the majors, either.

Idea-Make HBP the same amount of points as a walk. Currently there is zero points for HBP
-
Idea for releases- From when a release is posted on the Transactions board, any team has the opportunity to claim a player for 24 hours. The lowest team in the current standings to make a claim gets the player.
For contracts, here is how it would work: The releasing team still needs to pay a penalty with the same value as before. However, the claiming team pays the remaining balance of the contract. This more similarly reflects how if a team DFA's a player, another team can sign them and only pay the minimum, while the original team is still on the hook for paying the player.
Here's how it could work, in practice:
- Team A signs a player for 3 years at 1,000,000 per year. Then releases the player, opting to pay the penalty (660,000 per year) over three years, which they have to pay regardless of what happens next.
- Team B makes a claim within 24 hours, and is the lowest team in the standings to do so. They get the player, and then have to pay the player 340,000 per year for three years.
This allows for poorly performing teams to be able to grab players at really good rates, while also making dropping players a more exciting process because it is creating a direct opporunity for other teams.

Draft pick compensation for releasing certain mid to high level players into Free Agency.

I like this. Maybe it could be players that have reached a certain threshold on points scored in the season. It should be for higher end players only though.

This may or may not be a good idea.
In order to keep our teams more associated with our MLB teams, after the draft we can fill any remaining MILB spots with FA prospects in our teams? respective systems. For example, after the draft is done, if I have two open Minors spots I can fill them with any prospects signed to the tigers.
All the top prospects would likely be taken in the draft, of course. But it would allow teams to fill out their MILB rosters and likely keep us more attached to our actual MLB clubs in some way in the long run.
To make it fair, we can include that they would need to be added before FA opens/before opening day.

I actually love this. In my DNHL league we have "draft keepers" where we're able to keep up to 3 draftees that our teams select. That works in that league because it's a 20 team league, so you still have good draftees out there after the keepers are taken. Since Moneyball is a deeper, 30 team league, that wouldn't work - there'd be no talent left in our draft. But if it's done AFTER the draft with the pool that's leftover - that could be doable.
-
Yeah it would absolutely need to be after the draft or it kills any value of draft picks

I'm in a couple other leagues that do this. They call it Organizational Adds and each team gets about 4 Org Adds/year. They are also tradable in the league.
-
Hm. What is the difference between them and draft picks if they are tradable?
-
an immediate change i would will proprose is that if you drop a player and the player is resigned to a lower dollar amount that any penalites will be waived for future years. I don't think teams should be pay any penalites for resigned players. Especially if your the team waiving and able to resign. All your doing is making balooned contracts more manageable
-
I strongly disagree with that as it takes away any risk at all to signing players to high paying long term deals. And certainly the team doing the dropping can't resign them and waive the penalty, that's just leaving the door way too open for contract manipulation.
-
you can disagree but i am allowed to have my opinions on it. Im not talking current year, im talking future years. But thanks for your thoughts
