Title: Free Agency start date, Injured Reserve rule and Orphan team rule idea
Post by: Rob on January 23, 2025, 11:48:17 AM
We are officially full and 100% paid.  Thanks, everyone!  I'm very excited about this league.  A few items up for discussion:

1) Free agency start date:
There's a push to get free agency started earlier than we originally projected.  Due to some scheduling conflicts on my part, we're offering two options:  Either start FA on Monday, Feburary 10th, or on Monday, March 3rd.  There's a poll on Discord if you have a moment to vote:  https://discord.com/channels/811706311208861777/1331977045051445409

2) Injured Reserve rules:
It occurs to me now that I didn't include any rules regarding when a player must be moved OUT of an IR slot.  My personal preference would be to only force players OUT of the IR in the offseason.  This would mean you could stash a player there after he's healthy, but are forced to move him out in the following offseason.  There's also the option to force a player out of IR once they are healthy - but that's more admin work for the staff, having to constantly check on other teams IR.  I'd like to eliminate admin work where we can.  And stashing players can work out strategically.  A third option would be to never audit IR - allowing teams to leave players in IR indefinitely after they've returned from injury.  I actually do it this way in my NHL league, but we only have 2 IR slots in that league and if you're stashing a player there because their contract sucks, it takes away from use of the slot for other players.  So, it naturally does not get abused.  Having 6 IR slots I have a feeling we'd see a lot more players stashed there to avoid cap hits.  Please let me know your thoughts on this.  Again, my preference is the first option - an annual offseason IR audit.  But I'm open to anything here.

EDIT - 4th option thanks to TAC - Healthy players are required to be moved from IR before any roster moves (FA acquisitions or trades) are executed by the team. This way admins need only review a teams IR status in advance of processing a player add or trade for that team.

3) Orphan team rule:
If we have a member drop out and need to recruit a replacement, I think it might be prudent to offer the new GM a few free drops.  In case we have a team that goes for it all one year and loads up on large contracts, but decides to quit in the following offseason.  The new GM would have some flexibility to get out of bad contracts.  This might help make a franchise like this more attractive to new GM's.  I'm thinking 3 free drops.  Thoughts?

Feel free to respond here - or vomit your opinion on Discord.  Whatever works.

Having trouble establishing a connection to this poll on Discord so here are my opinions

Free agency - either date is fine with me but probably leaning towards March 3rd

IR Rule - the 4th option. If the player is no longer eligible per MLB to be on IR, then he was must be activated before any other roster moves  can be made.

Orphan - No more than three.
