Title: O's & Buccos swap pitchers
Post by: OriolesGirl on April 23, 2010, 10:33:29 AM
O's receive:
SP Ross Detwiler $0.5m (P-2012)
SP Ohlendorf, Ross, $0.5m (P-2010)
SP Duke, Zach, $1.5m (2012)
P Lyles, Jordan, $0.5m (P-n/a)
C Jaramillo, Jason, $0.5m (P-n/a)
3-8 PIT (from LAA from CHC)

Pirates receive:
SP Arroyo, Bronson, $12.5m (2010) + $6m in 2010
SP Hammel, Jason, $9.5m (2010) + $2m in 2010
P Johnson, Jim, $0.5m (P-2011)
MI Betancourt, Yuniesky, $3.5m (2012) + $1m/year through 2012
C Torrealba, Yorvit, $1.5m (2011)
P Dunn, Michael, $0.5m (P-n/a)
5-2 BAL
6-2 BAL
7-2 BAL

I am eating $9m this year and another $2m in the next two seasons.  I lose a solid reliever in Johnson who has a friendly contract for the next two years.  However, I manage to cut the salary big time, dump a couple other players with contracts post-2010, and improve on my prospects.  Ohlendorf and Duke are in the majors right now.  Duke isn't flashy, but is consistent; Ohlendorf can really produce and be a gem; Detwiler is a solid prospect that can contribute right away; Lyles is a top starting pitching prospect.  I manage to cut my roster down by one spot (better than none). Lastly, I help Pittsburgh get some more draft picks while I move up in the draft by over 50 slots.

What am I doing?  Trading away young pitchers for older ones that I am not going to sign?

Well, I am doing this deal because
1) I want to help the O's out, their franchise is in the pits
2) I acquire another solid reliever, and bring in more consistent SPs for this year.  I have the cap to take on Hammel and Arroyo.  The Pirates pitching, just as in real life, has been horrible.  I can't survive the season without at least improving that part of my team.
3) Losing Lyles hurts, but he has been on the block.  I plan on seeing Chapman and Lincoln in the majors by season's end.  Turner won't be far behind, so my rotation will still finish the calendar year being young, talented, and fairly inexpensive.
4) I receive some more picks.
5) I didn't want Betancourt, but he could provide more depth.  Worst case scenario, I drop him after the deadline and cut $1m, $1.5m, $2.5m off his liability for the next three years - which with the $1m from Baltimore only puts me on the hook for $1.5m, $1m, and $0m.
6) I want to compete for a wildcard or division title.  My bats will produce albeit inconsistency but I need more production from pitching.  Here we go Reds, Cards, and Brewers!

Lots going on here.  Detwiler, Dukes, and Lyles are a good return.  Some veterans should help the PIT effort.

FYI, I may have overextended myself with this trade.  I miscounted bonuses and the Zimmerman deal wasn't reflected on my roster.  If so, I want this to go through still, and I will run to the big market teams (Phils, Yanks, Mets) to clear some room.
