Just to break the monotony around here, I figured I would try an exercise. As most of us are heading into year 3 with the league, it is time to look back and cast your vote as to the worst contract given out by a GM in this league. This does not count contracts that were already in existence when the league came to be. Arod, Vernon Wells, Johan Santana do not count...
My vote is for Ryan Garko - signed by the Cubs during the 2010 free agency period to a 15 mil - 3 year contact (5 mil a year) - for their money the Cubs got 38 PAs

Couple of other doozies...

- turned out to be useful for a season -

Whatever the value of the Andrew Jones' contract is, I am on the hook for 3M for 4 years.
-
Worst I ever gave was definitely DeWitt. Still managed to unload him relatively cheap. The Vazquez contract may end up being worse than DeWitt's if he retires though, even if he was useful for a year...
-
With MI's in this league Dewitt is worth the gamble.
What about this one... Not picking on ya Daniel :)

Jones was a buy out in 2009, doesn't count
-
Still too early on Parmelee to tell and if his numbers late last season hold up he will be more than worth it. Personally I think the worst ever will be the Peralta contract... but also too early to tell. Seriously doubt he will be worth half the money offered to him though.
-
We are also forgetting Edwin Jackson and Ricky Nolasco...Jonathan Broxton was re-signed at 12 mil, so that counts...
Melvin Mora was 18 mil for 3 years last off-season, signed by the for O's GM.
Jon Garland - 4 years @ 7 mil
Ben Sheets - 3 years @ 5 mil
Rich Harden - 4 years @ 7 mil
Jason Kubel - 3 years @ 14.5 mil
Kelly Shoppach - whatever I was paying him
Kendrys Morales (Thus far) - 11 mil per

Worst contracts are for players that get payed alot and don't produce sometimes a guy will get higher payday because team has the money to spend as long a player produces it can't be a bad contract as per nolasco / Jackson and Peralta as long as doesn't get injured it isn't bad contract
-
Garko and Shoppach were bad... DeWitt was a lot to throw out there. Nick Johnson = ouch
What makes these impressive is how the GMs were able to dump some of these

I don't agree. Worst contracts are those that overpay the most over actual value.
If you pay 20m per year for a guy who produces at 5m per year level it is a worse contract than if you pay 4m per year for a guy who never plays.
Real life examples from the specialist in bad contracts - my beloved Dodgers - applied to our fantasy league.
38m in 2 years. Andruw Jones - worse contract per year in the history of baseball
vs
55m in 5 years for Darren Dreifort - 55m for less than a season pitched.
In our league the Andruw Jones contract is much worse even though he actually produced some petty points during those years compared to the goose egg on Dreifort because of his injury. First reason is cap room. You are using up more cap in Andruw Jones than in Dreifort. If you use the remaining 8m per year in giving an Ok contract to another OF you will produce more than what Jones brings to the table. Number 2 reason is flexibility. If you drop Dreifort you are on the hook for much less money than is the case for Andruw Jones.
For these two reasons is that I think Peralta may end up being the worst contract in the history of the league if he does not produce like last year and regresses to his usual numbers.

As of now, and it's not finalized yet, but:
CI Lyle Overbay, 500k (2012)
-
I can't even look at that contract...it's almost as bad as what was residing in the Arc
-
Lind at 15.5 mil for one year...I don't think he cracked a 1,000 points in 2010
-
Some RL contracts are awful..
Santana
Soriano
we all those, I dont think anyones is as bad as those. No coincidence that the 2 GM's who signed them no longer have a job
-
Hendry just got a job with the Yanks... Don't forget Wells
-
Mike Hampton the worst ever in RL lol
-
Mike Hampton the worst ever in RL lol
could put pavano with yankees up there with hampton due to injuries with amount signed and actually played in contract. hampton to credit actually didnt do bad at back end of contract when got out of colorado
-
Didnt Javy Lopez get a big deal from Baltimore, only to do absolutely nothing!
-
Bobby Bo still getting money from the Mets...he makes more than Ike Davis
-
INF Tsuyoshi Nishioka
As he was optioned to AAA today, it reminded me of the 4 year, $9.5m contract ATL gave him. Lucky the new GM, released him.

yea when i first took the team i saw that big contract and had to look him up to see who he was
-
Should have seen the bidding war for him...it was fairly disgraceful
-
haha im sure it was rediculous
-
RP Broxton, Jonathan, $12.5m
Thank God, this is the last year!
