I'd like to take it one step further. I pulled this rule from MLB Live, because I like it a lot.

New Ownership = no cap hit to release inherited players.

I like the proposal any way to help newer ownership.

I have no position removing cap hits for new GMs, but I don't support removing cap hits for retired players or those who go play overseas.  I believe it is important to factor these things in to bidding as a possibility so that contracts for these players do not get unreasonable

Ideas from the survey regarding cap hits

  • Eliminate / reduce cap his for players who have retired or are no longer in MLB
  • Allow new GMs a free drop

I support item 1. I do not support item 2.

Allow free drops for retired players or players that go overseas

This also came up in Armchair.

Teams should absolutely have to pay for their bad contracts.  You can't give a green light to someone giving a 40 year old a 5 year contract just so they can drop him next season for free.

There has got to be something to make GMs think twice about offering over priced long-term contracts to the Max Scherzers of the world. If you make the deal, you live with it or buy it out.

A new GM should be able to drop a bad contract if the player has retired or was given an over priced long-term contract that would take the player past the age of 40.

Allowing free drops has received the requisite number of co-sponsors to move forward for a full league vote.  I will put together a formal rule change and post it as a poll.  I will post with both a one free drop option and an any free drop option with the understanding that all those who vote for any free drops also consent to one free drop.

Retired free drops has not yet received the required number.  The opinion on this seems to be split 50/50.  This thread will continue to be open for discussion.
