Title: Pirates/Nationals strike a deal
Post by: lp815 on April 13, 2010, 12:23:33 PM
The Pirates and Nationals have agreed to the following:

Pirates receive:
Ryan Zimmerman $9.0m (2013)

Nationals receive:
Chase Headley $0.5m (P-2011)
Marc Rzepczynski $0.5m (P-n/a)
Jose Tabata $0.5 (P-n/a)
Draft pick 2-3 from PIT (from DET)

Moving Zimmerman and Dunn is a goal of mine this year, and I feel I have received a good return on the Zimmster.  A quality young reliever who showed promise in '09, a top OF spec, and a young CI who will hopefully turn the corner this year.  Zimm could be A-Rod lite in the coming years, but his salary was not one I wanted to keep for 4 years.  Pirates to confirm, good dealing Colby.

EDIT: Listed Tabata's salary as 0.4, changed to 0.5.

Buccos agree to this deal.  I lose a good bit in this deal, but I gain a cornerstone of my offense.  I can afford Ryan, who is now the Pirates highest paid player.  Replacing Tabata and the draft pick (I think I am done trading them) will be tough, but I have managed to bring in other top prospects that weren't previously there (Turner, Chapman, Ramirez, Marte).

I have been gunning for Ryan Zimmerman for quite some time as he was the best corner infielder out of all the smaller market teams not looking to be in contention.  I am personally a fan of him, and at his age, and with his power, $9m/year isn't much.

Very good return for Zimmerman.  Headley is a professional hitter.  Rzep is a very good GB pitcher with a K/9.  Tabata is a good prospect that may one day pan out, if he develops power.  Zimmerman, when healthy, is a top CI option.
