Unfortunately, a contract extension which is less than the expiring one has to be at least 70% of the expiring contract, and can only be for a maximum of 2 years, in Kevin Pillar’s case, 70% of $1.5m is $1.05m. Normally we could round that number down to $1.0m, but in this instance, it would not fulfill the required 70% threshold, so Pillar’s extension must be at least $1.5m, even though that is above his market value.
You can extend him at $1.5m (2021) —is that what you want to do?
