Title: Trade: Giants/Tigers 1-24-19 12:52 am ET
Post by: Mets Donations Accepted on January 23, 2019, 09:59:09 PM
Tigers trade
Chris Shaw $0.5 (p-na)
Mark Melancon $2.5 (2019)

Giants trade:
Jose Abreu $11.5m (2020)
Yoenis Cespedes $6m (2020)
Ryan Brasier $0.5m (P-n/a)
Dylan Covey $2m (2020)
Genesis Cabrera $0.5m (P-n/a)
Nick Ahmed $0.5m (2020)

Tigers agree to this deal to try and fill out a roster. We have the cap space and hopefully Cespedes comes back late in the year and some of these young arms pan out. Thanks to Flash for the quick negotiation

Giants are agreeing to this trade for a variety of reasons.  Although it would seem as if the Giants are surrendering a boatload of talent in this 6 to 2 trade, the Giants are acquiring two hometown players and opening up some roster spots.  The Giants have tried to acquire OF Chris Shaw for several years, and the Tigers have balked at every turn, but finally, he is returning home.  Given his production at the end of last season, the Giants are hoping he can continue to show the power he exhibited in MiLB.

Jose Abreu had a variety of injuries in 2018, and went through some horrendous slumps, so with his current contract, the Giants believe it’s better to trade a player who still has some value instead of waiting until he becomes an albatross.  The same can be said of Yoennis Cespedes.  He is a lethal hitter when healthy, but he has been plagued by injuries the last two seasons and there is no timetable for his return.  So better to unload his $6.0m contract instead of carrying him on the roster hoping he gets back on the field.

The Giants hope Mark Melancon returns to form, so giving up Brasier is a wash.  The Giants also appear to be on the verge of acquiring some SPs through free agency, so the loss of Covey and Cabrera can certainly be offset by the new additions.

With all that, the Giants are gaining an additional $18.0m in cap to pursue other free agents.

Even so at first glance this trade seems one sided in favor of the Tigers their are question marks written all over some of these players.

I trust Ernie knows what he's doing here. Personally, I wouldn't do it but he'll make use of all the extra cap space in FA.

I got to back Ernie on this one he clears 18m in cap and moves some injured players and adds some more talent to his team.

Don't like it.  Feels like Ernie is punting to an extent, but hey.... he is looking for flexibility and more health so I get it.  I think a retool is what Giants need at this point.
