Title: Scoring for Pitchers and IP limit
Post by: rcankosy on September 14, 2011, 02:36:06 PM
Guys,

Let's wrap up discussions on these two issues sooner rather than later, because free agency will be here before we know it, and it will be affected by what we decide.  The IP limit should be easy, because we can re-poll the owners.  Scoring for pitchers could be one of those topics like social security reform that takes a while.

We should go with a set number of starts per week instead of the ip limit

Since this is a zero-sum league meaning all MLB teams are represented ,and teams don't play more than 1 game per week, you could make a reasonable argument that the limit should be no higher than 7 GS per week.  Remember, in order for 1 team to have more than 7 GS per week, another team would have less than that number.

This is what I argued for all along.  You could get extra innings from your bullpen, but the starters is the meat and potatoes.  This would force GMs to pick and choose.  The scoring remains the same because it forces pitchers on the bench just like some hitters are on the bench.  Bill James' ratios are maintained.

7 GS per week is fine if we have to set limits.  Although IMO it actually hurts the small market teams rather than helping them.  The large market teams will simply have five $20m SPs in their starting rotation and not bother with the second tier pitchers.

I play in a league that allows 9 starts per week. It works out great. On average you get 50 innings from your starters.

I respecfully disagree for two reasons.  That same argument could be made for everyday players and doesn't seem to have prevent some really good small market teams like the As and Brewers from doing well.  Second, that's the same obstacle our real-life counter-parts go through every day.  Uh oh.  Now, I expect someone to tell me that this this is not real life!

Also, depth goes a long way with injuries.  Look at the 2011 FGM Cardinals.

Big market teams will trot out a bunch of $20M starters, but that's just part of the game as a small market team.  I have also thought our limit should be in the 7 GS range, and would certainly be in favor.

I am ok with GS limits. 8 sounds like a good number to me: we have an extra batting spot so there should also be an extra starter.

The problem here is tht a big modification to the rules alters players values too much. Suddenly Middle Relievers that are inning eaters with SP eligibility will be worth a lot of money at low salaries while lower end SPs will lose a lot of their value and starters with RP eligibility will lose all their value. There needs to be a transition period to minimize the effect on teams and GS cannot be capped without capping IP as well. And please remember this is fantasy baseball after all. In real life every team is getting the necessary amount of IPs to end the game even if it is from a position player or from a player just called up from AA. It does not happen that way in fantasy baseball. So if one of your starters gets injured in the first inning of a game you get screwed real bad because you are down one start and have no IPs to show for.

My suggestions are 9 GS and 70IP.

I think it has to be an innings cap as opposed to a starts cap because then you can throw out RP after RP throughout the week. With an innings cap you can balance where you want your innings to come from. Depth will still play a role if injuries do occur. Two teams with high expectations both got killed by injuries this season because of very little depth.

I also don't think it puts too much in favor of the major market teams since there are only so many players to go around. It looks to me like less and less valuable talent will be available for free agency. You will always have the Clay Hensley's of the world who start for half a season, but what can you do about that?

can we start a vote on this?

We need too, it will drastically change the way you approach pitchers. Innings limit you can load up on short inning pitchers and get 12 to 13 starts a week.

GS limit and you want quality not quantity.

My vote is for an IP cap...65 innings

Marginal change to IP cap may be the way to go.  :iatp:

I agree with Daniel's point and Dan's innings thought.  I am in the 65 to 70 IP range, so good with the recommended 65 IPs.

On the trotting out 20m SP.  It is a theory that is just tossed out there.  Sure you have Cliff Lee, Verlander, Halladay, Lincecum, King Felix, and CC.  But look at the other high priced arms from last year:

AJ Burnett $16.5m
Nolasco 14m
Brett Myers 13.5m
Lackey 16m
Edwin Jackson 13m
Garza 10m

Also the contracts of:
Johan Santana 23m
Josh Johnson 13.5m
Peavy 14m

SP come with alot of risk.  Teams can go sign a bunch of 20m arms, but most likely paying for a career year with one or two of them and also run a great risk of injury.  Nothing worse than a high priced SP on the DL all year.

I am also with a 65IP cap. I'd like to also tweak the pitcher scoring eventually but I dont want to bog down the process.

I agree with Howe, yes the SP scoring process does need to be tweaked a bit... something the RC can take care of in the coming months since there are many varying opinions on which way we should go.

I'd prefer a starts limit, but if the consensus is 65IP then I think that's an improvement over the current rules and will help prevent diluting the pitching market by just throwing any live arm out there.

My concern with an innings limit would be that a shrewd GM could start multiple pitchers on Sunday and bypass the limit by quite a bit.

I agree that the way fantrax enforces this is less than ideal.  You could probably say the same thing about GS though.

That said, if this is all we have to work with, is this rule change not an improvement?

If the league moves to profsl scoring system next season, then we will not have any of those issues and we can have all teams in one league again.

I also don't think the opportunity will present itself to load up on one day, and if it does it will be awfully fluky. With the talent pool that is generally available, I really don't think it will be an issue. If this were a 12 team league, then yes it would be more of a concern.

Guys, we need pitching scoring adjusted. Its time to plan for next year, and this is imperative in preparation. Its been discussed for 5 months, lets get this done

Well then now is the moment for everyone to put there proposals before the RC, so we can decide. I'll give it a week, the proposals will then be looked at by the RC and a decision will be made.

So the 65IP cap proposal has passed correct?

I would like to make one last pitch for Game Score (see below).  We could ignore # 3 if it's a problem.  This stat has been used for years by sites such as ESPN to measure a pitcher's effectiveness.  I know it's not fielding independent, but I still think it's light-years better than what we are currently using.  For example, the current scoring isn't fair to pitchers in small ballparks and flyball pitchers.

Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score:

   1. Start with 50 points.
   2. Add 1 point for each out recorded, so 3 points for every complete inning pitched.
   3. Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.
   4. Add 1 point for each strikeout.
   5. Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.
   6. Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.
   7. Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.
   8. Subtract 1 point for each walk.

Change this

Quote
1. Start with 50 points.
   2. Add 1 point for each out recorded, so 3 points for every complete inning pitched.

to

IP = 50/9 + 3 = 8.56
K = 1
H = -2
ER = -4
UER = -2
BB = -1

I would remove the points lost for runs allowed and utilize XBH.
