Title: Mets/Nats trade 12/27/17 10:49 am ET
Post by: leppardkev on December 27, 2017, 10:15:46 AM
Mets send RP Brett Cecil 1.5M 2018

To Nationals for OF Nick Plummer 0.5M P-N/A and SP Hunter Greene 0.5M P-N/A.

Thanks Mets, I wanted to pick up a solid RP before FA and I like Cecil, I know exactly what to expect with him. Mets to confirm!

:NYM: agree

The Mets were looking to flip Cecil as he does not fit in our long-term plans. Luckily, we were able to move him to a team in need of relief pitching. The 2 prospects coming back will hopefully bear fruit in 2019 for Plummer and maybe 2020 or later on Greene.

I wholeheartedly believe in allowing GMs to run their teams as they see fit, but this trade is clearly ill-advised.  The Nationals were in sad shape before this season because previous GMs made some very poor personnel decisions.  The Nationals are in the midst of a rebuild, with patience, and a vision of the future, being key components in the climb back to competitiveness.

SP Greene, Hunter, $0.5m (P-n/a) was the #1 pick in this year’s draft.  He is a blue chip rookie, who by all accounts, is a bonafide MLB talent who is #18 in the top 100 prospects.  OF Plummer, Nick, $0.5m (P-n/a) is a 2015 #1 Pick who is expected to make it to the majors in 2020.  Both of these players are solid building blocks, and needed by the Nationals, in the rebuilding process.

Realistically speaking, RPs are a dime a dozen, and RP Cecil, Brett, $1.5m (2018) does not even come close to being an impact player.  Cecil was #70 in RP ranking and scored 8.31 fppg in 2017–he’s projected to rank #63 in 2018 with 6.48 fppg.  There are going to be a lot of RPs available in free agency and giving up Greene and Plummer for Cecil is simply too much.

This is a bad trade.  :veto:

I agree with Flash here. I know prospects aren't a surefire thing, but to trade an 18 year old who was just taken 2nd overall (should have been 1st) for a middle of the pack 31yo RP doesn't seem fair IMO.  :veto:

You cannot give up top prospects for RPs, especially not in this league, where the value of a RP is low. I know this GM and I understand what he is doing.  There is just not enough value coming back in this deal.
