3.) No matter what the current prospect contract is, the prospect extension kicks in the following year at the rate based on when the contract is given.
The 2018 season is the following year, with the player being on a (P-2018) contract, the extension is applied and replaces the final year of the prospect contract. The only way to have the extension expire in (2020) is to request the extension after the season begins—otherwise the aforementioned rule is applied.

Just so we are clear would the start of the season be Jan 1st or like when the games actually start playing? Either way, I will just hold off so I can get the extra year of control if I understand you correctly.

The “start of the season” is Opening Day of the 2018 season. Once the season starts, the extension you’ve requested would then go into effect in 2019.
