Cubs accept. I needed pitching help and this works out perfectly. Trading a couple good specs, but with Tanaka covered this year and $70m cap room next year this is the exact kind of deal I needed. Thanks for the easy negotiations Flash.

I originally traded for Tanaka because I thought he would aid in the Giants push to the playoffs, and more, if they were able to actually secure a Wild Card spot. However, such is not the case. At 28, he has a lot of mileage on that right arm and seems to be breaking down. He was just placed on the DL with "arm fatigue", and that has fueled an ever increasing skepticism about his value to the Giants.
Injuries affect all our teams, but at the same time, we have to continually evaluate our roster to see if we are utilizing our allotted cap in the most efficient way. At $10.5m, Tanaka is simply a luxury that the Giants cannot afford, so getting two decent prospects in Neuse and Laureano, along with Smolinski's expiring contract, seems the most plausible thing for the Giants to do at this time. This trade frees up a lot of cap space for the Giants in 2018 and that is a real plus.
Obviously the Cubs see Tanaka's value from a different perspective, and hopefully, this trade works out for both teams.
