Title: 2011 FGM Entry Draft Thread
Post by: Colby on August 16, 2011, 01:18:42 PM
Quote
Entry Draft Rules
The annual entry draft starts at noon EST on the day after MLB's signing deadline for draftees [August 16th, 2011].  Each GM will be given a maximum of eight hours to make their pick.  Once you make your pick, the eight hour clock starts for the next GM.  If you do not pick within that time frame then the following will happen.

If you had supplied the EC with a pre-rankings list, then the best available player from such a list will be taken.  If no such list is available then the pre-draft ranking list that is used for the draft will determine which player is taken by your team.  At this point, you will be placed on an auto-draft list until you request to be off of such list.

Trading of draft picks is not allowed.

These are bonuses to be paid in the entry draft per the rankings provided by Baseball America.  These bonuses are not based on actual Franchise GM draft position.

1 - $7.0m
2 - $6.0m
3 - $5.0m
4 - $4.0m
5 and 6 - $3.5m
7 and 8 - $3.0m
9 thru 12 - $2.5m
13 thru 17 - $2.0m
18 thru 31 - $1.5m
32 thru 46 - $1.0m
47 thru 64 - $0.5m
all picks from 65 on require no signing bonus

If a team is not present for the draft / times out, and did not provide a proxy pick, they'll be awarded the next highest ranked player that they can afford, and then placed on auto-draft.   The players ranking list is of the same order of Baseball America followed by the actual draft order.  Entry Draft will only have players who are eligible for the real life MLB Entry Draft.

Everyone, if you don't make your pick then you will not be skipped... your pick will automatically be made the next time someone has a chance to post it.  Please submit prerankings when you are almost up.  You can do this via PM, but that doesn't even guarantee your pick if that person (me or someone else) doesn't check their Inbox in an eight hour span.

Chris did not submit any prerankings... he PM'ed me about two guys he was interested in and that's it.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what any of that means.  The rules are clear.

The Padres are on the clock until 10:15 PM.  If he doesn't make a pick by then he will get the next highest ranked player.  If he PMs a list to someone who is not online within those 8 hours then the next GM can skip him.

Well where I work overnights I sleep anywhere from 2-9:30.  Baez, the numbers!  Rendon, injury concerns with the ankle and the shoulder.  Tough year to have the number 1 and 2.  I went with the crazy numbers, and his swing looked just as solid with a wooden bat.  Probably ends up at the CI, most likely 3B, which I need a CI badly.   Really young though, probably will take a few years.  And he was drafted by the Cubbies, makes me also cautious...but the numbers!

The draft started at noon yesterday and each GM has 8 hours to make their pick or they will be auto-picked with the highest ranked player they can afford.  You can send a list of players to Corey orColby if you are not available to make your pick.  Please let us know if you have transactions affecting your salary cap that have not been posted to the official roster pages.

Nope.  Your pick already affected those in front of you.  You may only change your pick if yours was the latest pick.

Lindor has a $3m signing bonus.  Your roster shows $1m in salary cap so you would have to drop some players to get him if that is correct.

nope.  75% of 7.5 = 5.63 which rounds down to 5.5.  that saves 2m off the orig 7.5 plus his .5 cap space.

Do the Nats have the cap space to pay Cole 5m?  Their roster shows 5.5m cap space, but that was used up in the A-Rod deal.

I know it's a lot of work, but is there any way we can get the rosters updated to avoid this confusion?

Roy: Corey and I were just talking about this.  Jake wasn't aware of his roster status and would not have selected Cole if he had better knowledge on his roster.  While it is his responsbility to know his roster, this still creates an issue in the draft.  The best way may be to allow Jake to repick his player so that it is legal and then give people down the line a chance to repick.  For example, I would take Cole if Jake doesn't and then someone may take BA's #2 guy causing a couple other changes in selections.  It's best to solve now as Jake may not want to drop a bunch of prospects to clear cap room.

I would be dead set against that!  It was Jake's responsibility to know his cap space the same way that the Royals got stuck with someone, because he didn't make a pick.  I would allow Jake leniency in clearing cap space, but no way should we re-do any picks.

I looked at Jake's roster.  He's got a few 2011 expiring contracts for guys with very little to no future value, and he also has guys like Bill Hall whose contract expires in 2012 that he can cut to clear cap space.  I don't think he will have to cut any quality prospects to clear room for Cole.

Are we allowing the Angels to have Levi Michael rather than the auto-picked Matt Purke?  That doesn't seem to fair to the Royals who had to keep Crick imo.  We need a decision now, because that affects the people drafting after the pick.

The Angels' situation is different.  The Royals wanted to change their pick after many others picked after them.  The Angels wanted their guy and not the autodraft posting before another pick was made.  Only the Astros have continued on with the draft.

The Angels made room for the signing of Levi by dropping Durbin (clears $500k of payroll).  I checked back on the Royals autodraft to make sure I am being consistent in my approach to draft disputes.

As Commissioner, I approve the Angels selection of Levi Michael.  The Astros are OTC. :judge:

Colby stated earlier in the draft as long as no one has picked after an auto pick, that pick can be changed... I however do think we need to make it 12 hours in between picks. Some of us are night owls and frequent the site at night, and others during the day. 8 hours is a work shift, not including commute. If someone doesn't have computer access at work, they might end up screwed. Or if they were sleeping while a pick was made and didn't check the site first thing the following AM. It is really asking a lot of people to be able to log on in 8 hours.

I submit that even if picks are made after an auto pick, that pick can be changed as long as the re-picked player has not been selected already.

Advantage: you can shorten the window to 4 hours inthe later rounds and you wouldn't get any complaints about missied picks. By that point, there is not a lot of differentiation between the players.

This is what I think. Of course I was really upset that I missed my pick, because I was really looking forward to getting Bauer since I live in AZ and like his freakishnish. That being said the rules are the rules and I should have sent a proxy list. Just being so busy with my first week of teaching it got lost in translation. Here are some ideas....

A) I think in the first two rounds we increase the time to 12 hours, third and fourth eight hours, fifth and sixth six hours and the rest at four hours.

B) Since the first and second rounds are pretty important with a lot of signing bonus' we should be able to be able to re-pick if no more than three teams have picked after the auto-pick. This way if gives a little extra time and it also does not really affect the other proxy lists.

C)The rounds after the second should not be auto picked and allow the team to draft when they get on. If it gets to the end of the next round and the team still has not picked, the pick will be auto-picked. i.e...I miss my pick in the 4th round, the 5th round finishes and I still have not picked, then I get auto-picked.

This will make the later rounds quicker and since they are such a crapshoot then it will not make as much of a difference. The adjustments to the earlier rounds will just allow people to really try to get what they want. I mean most workdays are longer than 8 hours and sometimes you forget to send a list (i.e. me this year)...just some thoughts.

As to point one, I disagree as the auto-picked player may have been coveted by a team that had to choose a different player...it could start a very unpleasant domino effect.  We should not be able to retroactively make selections.

As for point two, I also disagree.  I guess I just don't understand what the rush always is with these drafts.  It's August, baseball doesn't start up again until February.  For those that spend countless hours scouring amateur talent, later round picks are where many feel the cream separates from the pack, so to speak.  As evidenced by my track record of drafting, I am not one of these well-informed amateur guys, but I still think they should have the opportunity to treat the final rounds as importantly as the first rounds, should they so choose.

Wrong shooter. The Mets roster shows .5m but they do not have .5m. They have no cap space. Thus your auto-draft would cause the Mets to be over the cap. Thanks tho.

Rosters are up to date after the first round and supplemental round of the draft.  The only moves you have made since then was a 0.5M drop to get down to the roster limit.  So the 0.5M cap room listed on the mets roster should be correct.

Hmm when I looked I had .5m, no Jokisch and had to drop a guy. My drop is not free. But if I some how have the .5 I would love to take my Braves real life 1st rounder. Lock it up. Thanks shooter, you actually upgraded my pick.

Players signed indicated in Bold

Round Overall Team Player Position School State Bonus

6 204 Texas Rangers Derek Fisher OF Cedar Crest HS, Lebanon, Pa. Pa.

Heading into the spring, Fisher looked like he could sneak into the first round thanks to his bat and body. Terrible weather in Pennsylvania has made it tough for scouts to get a good look at him, however, and Fisher has been inconsistent when he has played. He has swung and missed a lot, been too aggressive on balls out of the zone and not aggressive enough on strikes. He has an extra load at the plate this spring and now it seems to be a mental block. When he is on, Fisher shows an above-average bat with above-average power. He has a strong frame at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds and has shown good speed in the past. He plays center field now but eventually will get too big and will have to move to left field, and he should provide solid defense there. He is committed to Virginia and isn't considered an easy sign, but he could still go in the first two rounds if scouts see him perform well before the draft.

26 790 Houston Astros Jared Fisher RHP Newport HS, Bellevue, Wash. Wash.

Kc pick shouldn't change because picks had been made since he had been autopicked. I quoted what colby posted on the first page about how a pre-ranked list sent in a pm doesn't guarantee you those players if someone else autopicksfor you.

I think this is BS, you tell me that in 2 days Colby did not look at his personal messages. I sent it well in advance and it was enough guys to carry to my pick. This is the second time in the draft I am screwed, the first was my fault but this one is not. This seriously has to change, I have put a lot of research into the guys that I want and I do not want to pay the bonus for someone I was not interested in. I work at least 10 hours everyday, and cannot get to a computer during that time. If I cannot send a list of players 2 days before my pick then this draft should just all be auto-drafted. One of my favorite things is looking at young players and then being able to choose them with an idea of how they will develop, then see how wrong or right I am. This is probably my favorite part of this league and I am just getting destroyed because I have a full time job and cannot be on the computer during my work hours. I hope that Colby changes this, I have been with this league a while and have been a very active member for the entire time I have been involved. How am I supposed to pick if I can't get on the computer and I cannot PM someone who helps run the draft 2 days early?

My bad... Freddy did do this; I have been so busy lately that this one slipped my mind.  This puts Winkler back on the prerank list.  The Mets, Pirates, and Marlins made their picks, but I will confirm with Florida that they do not want Winkler as they took the best available.  The Nats and Twinkies picked who they could afford, so as long as Florida verifies their pick then we can move on.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

This doesn't seem to be consistent with every other decision regarding auto drafts in this draft and goes against alot of things you have already said.

Handled it... my mistake. :toast:

The Angels' situation is different.  The Royals wanted to change their pick after many others picked after them.  The Angels wanted their guy and not the autodraft posting before another pick was made.  Only the Astros have continued on with the draft.

The Angels made room for the signing of Levi by dropping Durbin (clears $500k of payroll).  I checked back on the Royals autodraft to make sure I am being consistent in my approach to draft disputes.

As Commissioner, I approve the Angels selection of Levi Michael.  The Astros are OTC. :judge:

Nope.  Your pick already affected those in front of you.  You may only change your pick if yours was the latest pick.

So can we change auto picks after other teams have drafted? Or can we only do it when we have sent a list to someone? Or is it only in special circumstances?

So far the Royals couldn't change because people behind them had picked.  The angels could because no one had picked after them when they wanted to change it.  Now the Royals were able to change there pick after an autodraft and other people had picked but they had sent a list this time.

Bob, you are new to this league.  You have to understand that every situation is different.  The previous situations with the Royals and Angels were different from each other and different from the latest Royals episode.  In this event, he sent me a list of prerankings, and I completely forgot about them when I updated the draft yesterday.  Simple as that...

It appears the Marlins would be the only team that would take Kyle Winkler, so let's have them verify their pick and move forward.

I am new to this league and just trying to figure out how things are run here.  This is what you posted on the first page of the draft thread.

Just trying to determine why this rule was not followed in this case.  Since this rule isn't followed everytime it must be more of a guideline that the commish can choose to follow or not follow depending on the circumstance.    Seems the answer to my question was C.  Special Circumstances.  To me rules that are made should be followed at all times.  If you break them for special circumstances once it is a slippery slope that can cause problems down the road.

Prerankings were submitted, so it was a Commissioner error here... and the rule is bound to fail down the line due to user errors in the draft.  It has worked 90% of the time thus far.

Boston Autodrafts     124) Billy Flamion, of, Central Catholic HS, Modesto, Calif. , $0.5m - Did not sign
Houston Autodrafts   132) John Curtiss, rhp, Carroll HS, Southlake, Texas ,  $0.5m - Did not sign
Detroit Autodrafts      136) Adam Morgan, lhp, Alabama , $m

Please let me know if this is wrong.

That looks correct... I didn't see that you drafted for boston out of turn.

If a million consecutive picks are going to be made, mind sending a PM when I am on the clock? I last checked the draft yesterday morning and saw that there were more than 5 picks ahead of me. Now I check again and not only was I autodrafted, but there have been a million picks after me. Thanks.

On a separate note TOR asks that if we ever lose another pick and are autodrafted for to pick only MIs or Cs. Thanks.

Last year we started over with the amateur draft picks who were not in the top 200 rankings.

Can you expand on this? Are players not on the top 200 who drafted the highest in real life gets autopicked?

The other issue is that some teams, e.g., SD, are at the EDR player limit.

Correct, start with the #1 draft pick and go down the list.  Any player not already drafted in FGM will be autopicked in that order if they signed a contract.  Unsigned players in the top 200 BA ranking may still be autopicked for teams having salary cap space.

Teams that are at the EDR roster limit will be skipped and may pick later if they drop someone from their EDR.

I will accept the change of my last pick if possible. Alex Santana LAD instead of Gaviglia. Also, I saw my EDR is full I would like to let go Camarena, Free him up for whomever wants to pick them. TOR will forfeit the rest of the picks in this draft. (By the way my EDR roster shows Suarez and Morgan instead of Gaviglia and Camarena which were the two players autodrafted.)

Thanks and sorry for the trouble.
