Title: Twins/Cardinals Deal- 1/31/17 3:32P East
Post by: RyanJames5 on January 31, 2017, 03:10:19 PM
Twins receive:
Matt Thaiss .5 P-n/a
Jose Reyes 10.5(2017)

Cardinals receive:
Ryan Mountcastle .5(P-n/a)

To be approved my :MIN:

The Cardinals make this trade to clear up some additional cap space to make a run this year.  I hate to give up Thaiss, as my first round pick last year, I like the bat a lot and think he could be an impact player for the Angels, but he won't help me this year.  I do like getting Ryan Mountcastle back in return as well.  As much as I try to avoid it, I can be a little bit of a homer and I think he has solid upside and should stay up the middle for the O's.  I like the potential a lot.  Thanks Anthony for the easy talks!

I accept. Mountcastle is good, but his bat isn't nearly as strong as Thaiss. I like the upgrade I get for using some of my cap space this year.

I waited awhile to comment on this transaction because I am not a fan of this trade.  For such a big salary dump, getting a one to one exchange of prospects, regardless of Thaiss upside, is not really something I view as worthy of approval.  Helping another team "go for it" during the current season without securing more assets for their own team is questionable considering how much an extra $10m in cap space will help the Cardinals.  My first inclination is to veto this trade because I do not view as something that is in the league's best interest.  As a commissioner, it's really counterproductive to encourage a team to sit back and leave open roster spots when it has the capacity to utilize it's cap to become more competitive.  That said, I don't want to see any "You're ridiculous" responses from the Cardinals GM as I have had in the past with some corresponding spin.  I've read the reasons for the trade rationale as stated by both parties, and really don't think they sufficiently explain why this trade should be approved.  With that, since a trade committee member is one of the parties, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, and I reluctantly approve.

I understand your assessment, but I disagree. This trade significantly improves my team's chance at being competitive. Right now I have no MI, and no interest in investing long term in the current MI market of 30+ year olds, or throwing money at an average 27 year old like Glavis. Taking Reyes, who is currently the #1 3B on the Mets depth chart (according to ESPN), makes my team better this year. There's no comparable MI in the FA market I could get for 10m total (not per year).

As for the prospects, we only have 20 minors spots and 10 draft picks. I need to upgrade my prospects where I can. Otherwise I'm stuck with 30 mediocre prospects and 10 that need to be cut. Thaiss is a much better hitter, 2 years older and closer to being MLB ready, and will, along with Rosario, be a starter on my team's roster in the near future.

Everytrade I make is to make my team more successful, and my team is more successful after this trade than it was before.
