The Padres, with their $60.5m salary cap, have a major cap problem at the moment, and with a new GM, with a roster filled with prospects, there is a fine line between improvement and regression. Small market teams like the Padres have to be creative with their roster, so this trade was negotiated as a way to add two players in positions of need for a player on an expiring contract. Morton is also on an expiring contract, but could be extended on a team-friendly contract. Barnes is a productive RP on a prospect contract. Not really jazzed about Soler's $6.0m contract, but since he is in the last year of his deal, and going to a new team, he could help the Giants outfield corps.
This trade also allows the Padres to sign two newly acquired free agents that will help his team. I made a similar trade last season with the Rockies when that GM was also over the cap when I traded Cameron Maybin for Desmond Jennings, a trade that proved very bad for the Giants. Hopefully, this trade will turn out well for both teams.
