Title: Free Agency Pitchers
Post by: BHows on January 31, 2016, 05:53:05 PM
I have to say that I am very surprised at the turn-out for pitching this year. Don't confuse that with disappoint, quite the contrary. It's just that this league has been known for years to be hitter-friendly; pitching was secondary. I believe in the long run this will be beneficial to the league. Let me explain:
The highest priced starter I have seen so far is Chris Archer @ $13m/yr. Pittsburgh stole Arietta for $11.5m/yr. These are 2 Top 10 SP in this league. Look at the current extension prices and you will find "SP-10    $11.0    Shields, James".
Part of the reason we changed to a yearly evaluation of Extension Prices based on current contract was to try to bring pitching prices more in line. Obviously this can't be done over one season but as more high priced pitchers are available at auction, extension prices should trend downward.
Seems like we are also seeing an uptick with the # of nominations this year. I'm hoping that this combination will result in teams investing more in pitching; actually extending some in the near future
At least, on the surface, that's what it looks like to me. Maybe there are some hidden downfalls in this theory? Thoughts?
