Title: Keystone state rivals deal again....
Post by: papps on June 30, 2011, 09:27:26 PM
The Phillies and Pirates have agreed to a deal:

Phillies trade:
CI Kotchman, Casey, $5.5m (2013)
X-CI Kotchman, Casey, Cash Exchange on Contract, $-5m in 2011
Phillies pay $2.5m in 2012, $.05m in 2013
MI Donald, Jason, $0.5m (2011)
RP Marshall, Sean, $2.5m (2011)

Pirates trade:
CI Butler, Billy, $9m (2012)
Pirates pay $6m in 2011
SP Moseley, Dustin, $0.5m (2011)

Phillies did this deal to upgrade the CI position.  I get a much needed starter back in return as well.  Thanks for the negotiations Colby!

Pirates to confirm.

:iatp: Call me crazy for trading away young stars.  Butler is Helton-lite to me, but hasn't been putting up the numbers that I have expected of him.  I do not see a long-term future for him with the club and wanted to free up some more space next year and acquire a productive replacement CI.

I'll approve, but I do think the return on Butler is a little on the weak side. I do understand why Colby is moving him. It is entirely possible that this is what he is and he will never get better, and that isn't worth 9 mil to a small market team. IMO though, his upside is still has more value than an also ran like Kotchman. Oddly enough, 5 years ago, Kotchman had a very similar projected future as Butler.

My bad, missed this one.  I like Butler, but return is ok.  Can't believe Kotchman has value.

i think we may need to get the rc to chime in on this trade as well as the reds/giants trade.
