Title: TOR/OAK Agree to Deal
Post by: Needle Juice on May 27, 2011, 01:33:06 AM
The Bluejays and A's have agreed to the following deal:

P Dunn, Michael, $0.5m (2012)
OF Taylor, Michael, $0.5m (P-n/a)
for
CI-OF Huff, Aubrey, $4m (2012)
X- TOR pays $3.5m in 2011, 1m in 2012
SP Hill, Shawn, $0.5m (2012)

I give up a good bullpen arm and prospect that appears to be buncing back this year, with a very good year.  I take a chance on Huff.  Currently, Huff's K rate is well above career averages and I think it will right itself.  Also, he is historically a 2nd half guy.  Hill was basically a roster spot.

Good deal for both teams.  Thanks for the easy negotiations, Daniel.  Bluejays to confirm.

Jays gladly accept. With Reimold and Morse heating up, Huff is replaceable and we had been looking to deal him at the right price for some time now. Taylor is having a great year so far and will hopefully be called up at some point. Dunn is a nice addition to our bullpen, which is currently lacking in depth. Thanks for the offer Rob.

No offense to either parties, but if the previous Reyes deal was vetoed this should get another look.

Huff last year finished ahead of Texeira and Wright in scoring and has a very reasonable contract.
He is traded for Taylor (who by the way was a throw-in in an earlier deal). Taylor's so called good start to this year is based upon 50 plate appearances in which he somehow had a 34% line drive and a .485 BABIP, neither of which are sustainable. Furthermore, he's plate discipline is actually worse than past, as he has struck out in 25% of his plate appearances and walked in only 6%. Furthermore, out of the 17 hits he had this year, 15 were singles which lead to an even lower ISO that last year (a year which he hit only 6 HR in 500 Abs in an offensive environment)

Again, I just want some consistency here. If the Reyes deal was vetoed on the basis that Jeff could've fetched more, this deal should be re-examined for the same reason.

Howe,

I get your point and know it is more about the last trade than this one.

So Huff is scoring 3.63 pts per game this year.  He has been consistently inconsistent over his entire career.  In addition, I took a guy that is only going to take a roster spot up through the 2012 season because Shawn is never healthy.  Hasn't pitched so far this year.

Taylor is off to a good start.  He has shown in the past that he has power, OBP, and can hit for avg.  Dunn is a really good arm, especially if the Pitching scoring is tweaked slightly.

This is a fair deal.  It is also not comparable to the previous deal.

I have to disagree with Howe and say that Huff could not fetch more. I have shopped him around all year long and no one has offered anything even close to this. Even before the start of the season no one believed he could reproduce something similar to last year's numbers. I couldn't even get Hardy from the Yanks when they were desperate for a CI. And yes Huff had an amazing year last season, but we all know it was a fluke year, kind of like Yunel's 2009 season which was used to defend the Reyes trade... Plus, Huff is a fringe player in my team, he is actually on my bench right now and Hafner is currently injured. Once he gets back Huff will hardly get any playing time in my roster.

I had a feeling this was going to happen.  I approved this deal because I didn't want to start a big war.  I admit there is some resentment on my part for the Reyes deal but I still am going to be fair.  I do feel like every trade should be under the same scrutiny as my trade was.  I don't think this deal is any more unfair then my deal was.  I don't feel like the Reyes deal should have been vetoed and I don't feel that this one should be either.  In the same case both deals were done because the GM's got what they wanted and were happy.  If I feel like they could have gotten more is irrelevant.  They are not stacking a team unfairly and they are not cheating.  Not approving the Reyes trade is going to cause problems going forward.  It is a hard job to be part of the TC, especially when it is being approved by rival teams battling it out.  This deal follows along the same lines as the Reyes deal.  Could they have gotten more?  Are these prospects worth it?  Same thing.  I feel that this trade should be allowed just as I feel that Daniel should have approved the Reyes deal.

Huff is a notoriously slow starter (and even Rob acknowledges this) and his average was at .246 after April last year.

Again, I don't see the difference between this deal and the Reyes deal. It's not fair to veto one deal and not the other.

I also want to bring up the logic Rob used to veto one of my deals:

"One problem with this trade is that Crisp + a mid-level prospect (Duda) was traded for an upper echelon prospect (Colome).  So in this trade his value was the difference between a mid-level prospect and upper echelon prospect.  Later that day, his value is being represented as the better player of two traded for a top level Catcher."

Applying the same logic to this deal, Taylor was acquired in the following deal:

CI Tatis, Fernando, $2m (2011)
OF Taylor, Michael, $0.5m (P-n/a)

for
CI Martinez, Francisco, $0.5m (2012)
P Tejeda, Robinson, $2m (2012)

Taylor's value is established as a low level prospect (who by the way has a bad contract) plus an overpaid reliever. Yet a month later, he is traded for a CI that finished top 10 in both 2008 and 2010.

For the record, I don't have any vested interest in either deals. I barely play PHI or OAK.  Just looking for some consistency.

This certainly is not VMART for COCO and Wolf and either was Reyes.  This is part of the logic, there were several other reasons given as well.

So, Howe what is your solution when no one will be on the TC because they don't want to put up with this BS?

The bottom line is, if Jeff would have stepped up and said I want this deal to go through and this is why, things would be different.
