Post by: johnbosma on January 30, 2015, 07:41:47 PM

Detroit Tigers send:
SP Yordano Ventura (PC)
OF Matt Joyce ($3.7m in 2015)
$2m in cash to help cover Joyce's salary

Philadelphia Phillies send:
SS Nick Gordon (PC)
SP Trevor May (PC)
SP Victor Sanchez (PC)

Phillies do this deal to improve the major league team right now.  Gordon is hard to give up but his lack of power potential and the amount of time away from the majors made it reasonable to move him for 6 years of Ventura, Joyce will be a good piece in the outfield and could make an attractive trade piece if I'm not in the race.  Thanks John for the fair trade talks.

The Tigers make this deal because we're finally realizing what we should have realized a couple seasons ago: based on roster strength, we are unlikely to compete for a playoff spot. So, it makes sense to sacrifice big league talent (even young big league talent) in order to add multiple quality prospects. Saving a little bit of salary by moving Joyce is nice.

Ventura could turn out to be an extraordinary long-term performer but his frame concerns me. Gordon is probably a ways away but prospects with a strong chance of becoming above average shortstops don't come around every day. I think Sanchez is underrated as a prospect (despite his own physique issues) and I like his performance at an advanced level. I think May is probably a lot better than his limited big league performance indicated.

Thanks again for working with me on this, Jeremy.
