Title: 2011 FGM Power Rankings
Post by: Colby on March 20, 2011, 03:03:30 PM
I am not sure how often I can update them this year.  Too many player changes to point out names, but a lot of the same teams in the mix with some surprises and expected gains...

Grades: [Score, Batting, Pitching]

Week 1 Power Rankings
1) :PHI: - (0-0) [93.34%/B+/A] - Only true Philly on offense is Howard but pitching matches the Phils' fearsome four for the best pitching in MLB (1)
2) :MIL: - (0-0) [91.66%/A/B] - Pujols, Utley, Braun - why do we question Milwaukee? (-1)
3) :LAD: - (0-0) [87.27%/B+/B] - Reigning champs didn't need to do much, how will Kuroda hold up? (3)
4) :CLE: - (0-0) [87.00%/B/B+] - Cleveland has really put it together to make a run at the division title with solid veteran talent (and young studs like Gallardo and Votto) across the board, I like this team (6)
5) :COL: - (0-0) [86.93%/A/C+] - Rockies soap opera - star power AB, little to no depth, but story of the year is their pitching… perhaps the most improved team in the offseason since they had nearly no pitching last year (16)
6) :OAK: - (0-0) [86.30%/B/B+] - A's have young core back for another AL West run, but are susceptible to depth issues (-1)
7) :NYY: - (0-0) [85.66%/B+/C+] - Reigning AL Champs have little pitching depth (-3)
8) :ATL: - (0-0) [84.80%/B+/C+] - Offense is loaded w/Morneau, Dunn, Heyward, Uggla, Prado, and Ellsbury / little pitching depth (6)
9) :STL: - (0-0) [84.43%/B/B] - Many cheap veterans and young specs may go unnoticed at first glance… strong Cardinals team again
10) :PIT: - (0-0) [83.43%/B-/B] - Pirates will start off with better pitching and will hope to avoid injuries (10)
11) :HOU: - (0-0) [83.30%/B-/B] - Surprise playoff team from 2010 comes back with vets that do well in this league (Helton) and plenty of bench support and depth (1)
12) :CIN: - (0-0) [83.27%/B/B-] - Little offensive depth, stud players there, some decent pitching but not the greatest (-5)
13) :TOR: - (0-0) [83.04%/C+/B] - Jays lost a lot as focus shifts to pitching (-10)
14) :TB: - (0-0) [82.40%/B/C+] - Better bats than real-life Rays, rotation okay outside of Price, deepest bullpen ever (5)
15) :TEX: - (0-0) [81.40%/B/C+] - Sizemore, Betemit questionable - pitching okay, tough to beat A's (1)
16) :CHW: - (0-0) [80.17%/C+/B-] - I am not a fan of many of the White Sox position players here, but young rotation looks great (-3)
17) :BOS: - (0-0) [78.40%/B-/C] - Zero depth at the positions but some stars there - pitching is average, Red Sox need help (-2)
18) :DET: - (0-0) [77.36%/B/C] - Detroit has offensive potential, but rotation is weak link (-10)
19) :ARZ: - (0-0) [76.00%/C/C] - Bats have improved but will Bautista reproduce '10 campaign?  D'Backs look to build on strong 2nd half (-2)
20) :SF: - (0-0) [75.84%/D/B+] - When will Trout be called up?  Weak bats, little depth, excellent top of rotation (-2)
21) :LAA: - (0-0) [74.24%/D/B] - Yuk…. No offense, can't even fill C/CI positions, pitching is only bright spot (-10)
22) :MIN: - (0-0) [73.30%/C/C] - Twins signed too many aging vets  (3)
23) :CHC: - (0-0) [70.00%/C/D] - Cubs have a bright future, weak bats, and a nice ace in Verlander (-1)
24) :BAL: - (0-0) [67.96%/C/D] - Signed Michael Young, but many guys still in the farm as team is shorthanded (2)
25) :KC: - (0-0) [67.83%/D/D] - Royals can't mature quick enough, Fielder is huge for offense (5)
26) :WAS: - (0-0) [64.80%/C/F] - Nats have offensive potential, but zero pitching (-2)
27) :SEA: - (0-0) [64.34%/F/D] - Many holes, relying on Ackley and Chris Davis
28) :FL: - (0-0) [60.30%/F/D] - Not much has changed here.. Still relying on AAAA talent at most positions
29) :SD: - (0-0) [59.37%/F/D] - Pitching may keep them from being worst team
30) :NYM: - (0-0) [58.87%/F/F] - The Mutts look like the worst team in the league… GM is in question still (-7)

10) :PIT: - (0-0) [83.43%/B-/B] - Pirates will start off with better pitching and will hope to avoid injuries (10)

Oh no Johnny Cueto

Oh no Johnny Cueto

I am not too worried about Cueto just yet...

Funniest part of the rankings is the NL Central (sans Brewers, Cubbies)

I really don't think I am that far away from the Phillies. I will be interested to see what the rankings are come Opening Day, if I can make 1 or 2 more trades in the meantime. With that being said, very good job Colby.

You really think the Mets have less talent than San Diego?  If they do it wont last that way for long, they have that nice salary cap!

Dan just rocked bottomed Jake on the accouncer table, so ruthless.

As you can see, it took him about 17 hours to come up with it, which is roughly how long Dan's mom needs to work the streets to provide her son a meal at Popeye's.

17 seconds being the amount of time it takes for Jake's mom to engulf a Watermelon with her hoo haa. She also calls it the deep end of the pool, so the children wouldn't go near it when she was "entertaining".

Good read as always Colb... IMHO Yanks, Rox, White Sox, Twins, and Sawx need to be higher... Injuns, Stros, Brewers need to come down a bit. And again, the two Central divisions will be kicking the snot out of each other.

Dan - I have Colorado ranked very high already... Houston may be ranked high based on last year.  Teams won't have the luck this year thanks to the new schedule.

Aubrey - The % are for grades

It pleases me to see my Phils on top of the rankings.  There are a lot of really good teams out there so this season is going to be a lot of fun!  There are a lot of great managers here and the competition will be tough.  I'd rather be first on the final rankings of the season though!  :win:

I have a couple close ones, but my Pirates could be starting 6-2 with a loss each to both the Cards and Phils.  Close games are on the line with the Reds (2) and Brewers (1), so this is a big week out the gates!

I dont deserve the No.1 spot - Zimmerman is out for 3 weeks, Bucholz/Hughes both have major issues. Having played LA in this week, I got a first chance look at just how strong LA is. The pitching staff is so deep and talented, and the offense also packs a major punch. If the LA GM ever decides to trade some prospects to make a run for it, look out.

My personal top 5:
1. LA
2. NYY
3. PHI
4. OAK
5. COL

Agreed on LA.  Losing Furcal doesn't even phase him.  They are strong and you are correct about how good he might be with the prospects being traded.  He won it all with them.

Big movers this week: Jays and Astros fall, Royals and Twins rise... I think we are going to have a lot of competition this year.   I include the Reds because they can make a turn-around.  The Diamondbacks deserve credit with a winning record, but the NL Wildcard is going to go to a team with a lot of wins.  The NL East and AL West feature only two teams each that can win those divisions.  The Mets, Marlins, Nats, Mariners, and Angels don't even deserve consideration.

NL West
4) :COL: - (28-4) [88.53%/A-/B] - Rockies slip but Dodgers fall in NL West standings (-1)
2) :LAD: - (25-7) [90.57%/A-/A-] - Too early, but currently one behind wildcard leader ATL

Appreciate the love but I dont see how anyone is going to overcome LAD or MIL (now that they've acquired both Youk and Shields). Both teams are already extremely tough to beat, and both have enough pieces in their farm system to make several more acquisitions. My team on the other hand is facing major injury issues (Zimmerman out until All star break, Hughes for I dont even know how long). My minor league system is also depleted (thanks Dan) so it will difficult to acquire talent. I dont even think I can make the playoffs at this point...

I still like the talent on your team Howe.  It is a long season, so there will plenty of changes along the way.  I would love to predict my Pirates making the playoffs, but I can't see them getting past the Brewers or one of the WC teams.

Hoping to sneak in there somewhere and ruin someone's season. This team has come a long ways. Still looking to make another move or two. To gain me a little more respect this year.

Dark Horse: Tsuyoshi Nishioka is set to return soon, if he can get it going, I will have to do something about the log jam at MI (Prado, Uggla, Aybar, and Nishioka).

I don't wont to be accused of beating a dead horse, but my top 4 hitters have yet to really get going. Dunn is stuck in a funk and the 3 amigos (Prado, Uggla, and Heyward) are just sitting idle waiting on an invitation, I guess. It's embarrassing especially with the money invested in my offense, that my Pitching is outperforming them. Hopefully, these guys will come around soon enough so that I can barely squeeze into the playoffs and then surprise some people.

Well the Padres were that bad when I took them over.  Going into the season I didn't even know if I'd have a full lineup.  To have 10 wins is mighty exciting.  An increase in salary over time would be nice.  60m is only so much fun.

Yep, your team is definitely the worst now, but you have perhaps one of the best farms.

I knew what I was getting into when I took over the orioles.  I achieved my goals of reducing future contracts and improving the farm team.  With the first pick in the entry draft I should add a high level prospect and add some depth to the farm with the rest of my picks.

5) - (31-9) [89.30%/B+/A-] - Another solid week for Paul's Cards (2)

The Cards are unbeaten in the odd numbered weeks but struggle in the even numbered weeks.  Unfortunately this is an even numbered week plus we play 4 games with the Brewers.  The Brewers are still the team to beat in the NL Central even though we are 6-2 against them so far.  When does the easy part of the schedule begin?

Wow... this Brewers-Cards series will set you guys apart for a little bit.  My Pirates are due for a good week, so I am hoping to capitalize on one of you getting at least four losses.  Scoring has an ebb and flow with hot/cold hitters and pitchers' starts.

Lind was out all week (or should I say weak) with a bad back and Beckham has got a mean case of stank... I'm just waiting for an anvil to drop on Rasmus in center field, or Headley to get electrocuted by a hotel coffee machine.

WOW, if I am correct, I was down 30 points to the Dodgers (1520-1490) and I had one player left.....newly acquired Curtis Granderson. Who happened to score 44.8 points thanks a 1/3 night with 1R, 1HR, and 2RBIs. That might be the tightest game I have been apart of.

Side note, I'm sorry for anyone who had to play :TOR: looks like they lead the league is scoring (1800+) this week. 2nd place might be me (1540) which is about 300 points back. Plus, the Jays did it without Ricky Romero or Jose Bautista (real life Jays) who had good weeks.

When does divisional play end?  These NL Central matchups are killing me... Brewers have the most points in the league by a healthy margin (without Utley, or Pujols being Pujols), but also have the most points against thanks in large part to the Cards so we're in danger of being 5 games out of the division lead (pending this 4 game set with STL, still too close to call).

It looks bad that they have been so good, and hold the best record, but are 7th in the rankings.  It is based on an evaluation of their current staff and production... hence why the 29-loss Yankees are ranked so high.

Injuries are humbling.  JJ, Liriano, Ross, Litsch, Niemann from my SP and Ike from my lineup.  A benched Ike being upgraded to Rasmus and Headley should help.  Starting to get the arms trickling back in as well.  Looking forward to strong finish to the month.

FYI... 7) :PHI: - (61-11) [88.24%/C+/A] - Phillies are 27-5 over the past month (-5)

It looks bad that they have been so good, and hold the best record, but are 7th in the rankings.  It is based on an evaluation of their current staff and production... hence why the 29-loss Yankees are ranked so high.

Its funny too because I feel like my lineup is way better now.  I feel I have much more balance than before.  All I care about is winning at the end of the year.  :koolaid:

My issues were not near what the Reds went through.  What you went through wasn't fair to any GM.  Just discussing my down month, so far.

Here is my view of tiers of teams based on their ability to compete... different than the Power Rankings.

Championship Tier - Teams racing to win division
NL - :PHI: :ATL: :MIL: :STL: :LAD: :COL:
AL - :NYY: :TOR: :KC: :CLE: :OAK:

Competing Tier - Teams likely to be competing for division and wildcard but not to the level of the top tier
NL - :PIT: :ARZ:
AL - :CHW: :TEX:

Average Tier - Teams that will hover around .500
NL - :HOU: :FL:
AL - :BOS: :CHW: :DET:

Bottom Tier - Teams that are selling or should sell
NL - :CIN: :CHC: :NYM: :WAS: :SF: :SD:
AL - :TB: :BAL: :MIN: :SEA: :LAA:

i was having a bad week and a couple players got hurt. i felt i just didnt have enough money or prospects to trade to get past the royals

Hey Rob get in line if you are going to complain about injuries, my season was over in week two.

Doubt I've had the volume of injuries/ under-performance, but I've had some terrible luck myself.  Longo out for a month in game #2, Hanley underperforms.  I then trade for Posey, who goes out for the year, Hanley goes on DL and Longo can't hit water falling out of a boat...same boat as HanRam now that I think of it.  Add injuries to Neimann, Ohlendorf and Talbot and you have a recipe for non-contention.  On the bright side, I have Posey and Longoria locked up for a LOOONG time.

Yeah I can't complain too much I have Hamilton, Lind, Ike, Becks, and Mauer to build around going forward.

Huge week for my Pirates as the newly acquired Verlander pitches tomorrow.  I decided to start J.A. Happ.  Carroll and Cuddyer are plugged into the lineup.  I am down a 100 or so points to both the Cards (3-game series) and Phils (2-game series) with a huge lead in my Giants 3-game series.

Don't remind me of the situation...

My Pirates and a few other teams appear to be caught in that middle.  Give it a few more weeks until we see what actually happens.  I need Holliday to come back from the DL.

Looks like the East is the Phils to lose. Bravos are dealing with some big time injuries at a bad time, plus it seems Adam Dunn left his power in Washington. I expect Aubrey to make some moves before the deadline.

Pirates need to pick up a lot of games in the wildcard race, but I like the production that I have right now.  All of that and my best position player (Holliday) is on the DL!

My Pirates are 11 back from the wildcard.  I am hoping I can make those games up over the next month.  AL Wildcard is interesting...

:NYY: / :TOR: (59-21)
:TEX: (59-21)
:CLE: (48-32)
:MIN: (48-32)
:CHW: (43-37)

It looks to be the Rangers and the AL East unless one of the AL Central teams (not going to be the Twins) make a push over the next several weeks.

Halfway into the regular season.  If playoffs started this week then this is what we would have...

:MIL: Milwaukee Brewers (67-13) vs. :LAD: Los Angeles Dodgers (61-19)
:PHI: Philadelphia Phillies (67-13) vs. :COL: Colorado Rockies (63-17)

:OAK: Oakland Athletics (63-17) vs. :TOR: Toronto Blue Jays (51-29)
:KC: Kansas City Royals (57-23) vs. :NYY: New York Yankees (51-29)

Only true fresh face would be the Royals.  NL is dominated by four teams.

I think the Crawford deal would actually hurt my team this year. I am losing the #2 MI in the game for an OF that is hurt. My OF already consists of LoMo, Stanton, Kemp, Hart so Crawford might not even start even if he is 100% healthy.

I have been so scattered lately that I didn't even realize he was hurt.  The rankings would be better if I would look at every team on Fantrax each week, but that is way too much involvement.

Medlen was signed as a FA by the Orioles (or Cubs and was traded?).  You'll have to search the transaction history.   The Pirates signed him after he was dropped (immediately when he was being put on the shelf for TJ surgery) last August.  I recall the Cardinals dropped him just before that.

Just went back and found it.  Huskerfan signed him as an FA in February of this year.  Man did he make a bunch of crappy signings for the Orioles in his short tenure.  I dont know what was worse this signing or the Mora deal... also don't get why he said 3yrs at 6M for Medlen and 4Yrs at 13M for Mora.... must not have known how the bidding process worked.  Would really be nice to not have these two contracts.

You could cut them.  Imo, we have a team-friendly policy in terms of the cap effects of releasing players, especially if you cut them after the trade deadline.

Agreed.  Unlike MLB where contracts are 100% guaranteed, you are given a bit of a break here because: A) It's fantasy baseball, B) Your predecessors.

I know I can cut them for a discount.  Just gotta wait til the deadline to do it.  I have a few prospects I would like to sign but don't have the roster spots right now so its just kind of frustrating.

You can cut them now, but you would have to absorb 90% of their salary for this year as opposed to 75% after the deadline.

Well I hope 2012 isn't real so that maybe someday I can have a winning club.  But in all honesty, I watch my scores daily and if the schedule was more like Jon's are, with 3-4 day periods, I would be a lot closer to .500.  I have good breaks the first 3-4 days.  Oh well.  Go Nats!!

Only 3 against us, but yeah losing to Stl and LAD means it should be a tie atop the NL West going into next week, with Stl holding the division games lead (not sure on head-to-head, probably close).

Man what a year, cannot believe that ending. I really thought I had it. Congrats to the Indians for pulling in out in those last few weeks. Excited for next year with Hanley and Fielder on my team. 2012 is huge because I am possibly losing some guys after that and my farm is slowly getting re-built with young guys. I love this league though, best one I have ever been in. Wish that I had traded Joyce when his value was higher, my only big regret this year. My three year plan that I set when I joined this league is going better than expect though! I'm guess I am rooting for the Yankees in the playoffs since I am not in.
