I was also under impression that the extension is for future contracts.. not replacement. I'm pretty sure that's against the NHL CBA (no re-negotiations)

Yeah a contract extension should kick in the following season. But if your player does not have a contarct value right now the contact should kick in now...

Our system is based on the NHL but it doesnt translate entirely. I don't see how this is an issue...

Ya isn't extensions basically re-signing your player before the end of the season. The contract should kick in the following season.
