i don't think a 3m contract is legite because the max on 2 years is >1.2 so that would be 2.4m and the min on a 3 year is <1.2 so that would be 3.6m or am I looking at that wrong?

when you bid you must only submit the total of your bid. you can split it up anyway you want to, and add more cash if you need to. it's legit, some bids are logically more sound then others. not saying this is or is not.

It is my understanding that the restrictions are for the maximum length of a contract. There is no minimum, he can have that $3 million as a 1 year contract if he wants. He can sign a $60 million 1 year contract according to the rules (I believe)

No there are also minimums. What player would sign a one year 10m dollar deal?

Hossa with Detroit.
So to clarify, that 3 Million dollar bid is essentially the same as a 4.5 Million dollar bid because the smallest contract you can sign is 3x1.5 right? So if you bid anywhere between 3 and 4.5 you end up paying the same amount.. may as well swing for the fences and bid the 4.5 value.

Hossa with Detroit is rare. Its usually more like: Lecavilier (sp?) with Tampa Bay, Ilya with New Jersey, and to an extent Savard with Boston.
You've got it. Mine as well swing for the fences.
