All of the discussion by Dan and Roy has prompted me to consider moving up the deadline for signing pending free agents come next season. However, the recent real-life trade of Olivo to the Blue Jays shows that players are still traded even though they were not signed for the next year.
See this thread in the Rockies fan forum... http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=11698.0 (http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?topic=11698.0)

Olivo had and option for next year, that Colorado had yet to exercise. So technically he was their property. We don't do options though (thank god)... I am in favor of moving the deadline up.

Im all for it. But I will say i like having it later tho, for a few reasons. Like certain players fantasy value are majorly impacted by where they are in real life. I like having it after the mlb starts theres, just because by the time we do our free agent signings we know where most players will be. Big advantage.

At the end of the day, this is a fantasy baseball league (my answer to many of these types of debates). I am very happy with the rules that we have established in this league, but I am always open to tweaking.

My question: is the current rule detrimental to our league as it stands now? Will moving the date forward improve the league?

To me it's a no-brainer. You would want to have your books cleared by the end of the season.
I can cite Kyle Lohse as a prime example:
The $8m (75% ?) hit I took occurred in 2010. This year it's $5.5m, a savings of $2.5m

I think we can have a lot of fun with the trades right now and that would be taken away with removing trades of pending free agents.
