With the resigning period quickly coming to a close, I just want to make sure I understand the rules:
"OFA follows standard FA bidding rules. However, if the free agent is restricted (rights are held by another team), then that team may match the final offer and sign the player to the new contract."
I assume that this means that I have matching rights to players on my roster designated with a 2013 contract that I do not release?
-
That rule was in place before free agent compensation began. I believe that part of the rule should be deleted.

So if I don't resign David Wright (2013),etc. and allow them to become a FAs do I have the right to match the winning bid in January?

No, if a player is not resigned and goes into FA the highest bidding team gets the player. Restricted free agents were used by the league before the league used FA draft pick compensation. This part of the rules is old and no longer applies.

I'm glad I asked. This changes everything for me with one day left. Shouldn't we, as an RC, maybe go thru the rules and eliminate those that are obsolete?
I assumed I could match and was going to take the calculated risk of allowing Wright to leave. Resigning has been slow, maybe other are assuming the same thing?

RFAs were replaced by straight forward Type A/B compensation. That should be removed from the rules. BHows' suggestion about going through the rules is a good idea.
-
It's just a shame. If I'd known matching right were no longer available I may not have made one trade and probably would have taken advantage of at least one trade opportunity.
Oh well

This is already on my list of things to do during the offseason. Will likely take a look at it starting in late October and will have it completed well before FA starts.
