Title: Suggested Rule Tweak for Releasing Players
Post by: Colby on September 29, 2010, 02:10:38 PM
Quote
Release Rules
If the player is dropped after the trade deadline, then the hit to the cap changes to 75%, 50%, 25%, respectively.

The hit against the cap is rounded to the nearest $500,000.  Therefore, if it ends up being less than $250,000, the hit to the cap will be zero for that year.

Dropping a player that is under contract at $500k/year for 2 years AFTER the deadline results in a cap hit of $250k, which rounds to $500k.  The 2-year $0.5m  contracts are a pain for that reason.  I am suggesting we change this rule, effective in January 2011, to make that "less than or equal" that way you can drop (after the trade deadline) such contracts without penalty in the next year.

I like this ever so slight rule change... hopefully the league supports it.  It only makes sense.

I fully support the rule tweak.

I don't like this rule change. 2y 0.5m contracts are usually a risk that you take with possible high rewards. If you didn't want to be bound to the player for two years, then you should had offered a 1 year contract instead of a 2 year contract. If you allow these contracts to be dropped with no penalty on the 2nd year you are taking all the risk away from such pickups. For example last year I gtot a couple of guys on my team with these contracts like Stauffer and Escobar. I got a bargain in Stauffer, but Escobar never recovered from his injury. I think it is only reasonable that I'm stuck with Escobar's contract, while I'm reaping the benefits of the Stauffer contract.

Note that you can only avoid the cap hit in the 2nd year if the player is dropped after the trade deadline in the first year.

I tend to agree with Daniel... there would be no reason not to bid up from $0.5M to $1.0M, because the extra year is essentially a team-only option.

It would make more sense if it were the other way around. Avoiding the cap hit on the second year if dropped before the trade deadline in the first year.

That doesn't work with the percentages.  Right now, $250k rounds up to $500k.  I am promoting the idea of having $250k round to 0, $750k round to $1m, $1.25m round to $1.5m, and so forth...

Yes but the problem with doing this is that it would make 1 year 0.5m contracts pointless. Like Ben said it would make the 2nd year on all 0.5m contracts a team option. So why would anyone bid 0.5m on a player? It makes the risk of the 2y 0.5m contract completely evaporate. Teams are able to enjoy the player through the whole season and them drop them after the deadline with no hit to their following year's cap. Maybe we could do a massive drop discount that goes in accord with the percentages. Like if you drop 4 players with 0.5m contracts next year you receive a 1m cap hit instead of the 2m.

You have an excellent point about how it makes the 1-year deal worthless.  This is what has happened in TGF.  The administration of your last idea is tough because GMs who drop four such players over the course of a few weeks won't receive the same benefits of another GM who dropped them all at once.

I don't think we need to tweak the current rules, since in MLB contract are entirely guaranteed - we're already giving FGM owners a break with the current discounts.

Think I'll concur with Ben here.

I at least feel good that I brought this up into discussion.  Consider this discussion finished as there will be no change to the rules for releasing players.
