5th Down: Week 8
« on: October 25, 2012, 01:17:54 PM »
The 5th Down Blog is designed to help you, the fantasy owner, on whom to start, sit, and who we pick as a sleeper for the week. Each week, we will take turns doing a position for the week. Feedback is always welcome as we love to discuss football!

Check out past postings of the 5th Down for each week: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Quarterback - Mike

Must Start: Ben Roethlisberger :PIT-NFL: vs. :WAS-NFL:
The Redskins are giving up more yards through the air than any other team, and Big Ben has been playing well, and I'm still not sold on the current running game in the Steel City.
Other must starts: Andrew Luck, Christian Ponder

Must Sit: Matt Stafford :DET-NFL: vs. :SEA-NFL:
Stafford can no longer be trusted, he only has eyes for Megatron, and everyone knows it. The Seahawk corners are big and physical, and Lynch will grind it out from the other side of the ball. Look for a low scoring game.
Other must sits: Mike Vick, Cam Newton

Sleeper: Brandon Weeden :CLE-NFL: vs. :SDG:
With Richardson banged up, and with Weeden getting into a grove with his young WR's, look for a big day against the Chargers soft pass D.
Other sleepers: Sam Bradford, Brady Quinn

Running Back - Mike

Must Start: Willis McGahee :DEN: vs
I can see the Broncos wanting to play control, and Willis is the guy for the job, the Saints are 2nd to last in rush-d.
Other must starts:Reggie Bush, Ryan Matthews, Chris Johnson

Must Sit: Trent Richardson  :CLE-NFL: vs :SDG:
He's not healthy, and the bolts are stout on the run, look for another option.
Other must sits:Shonn Greene, Steven Jackson, Adrian Peterson

Sleeper: Alex Green :GB: vs :JAC:
The Pack should blow out the Jags, as they lost MJD, and maybe Gabbert too. Green should have his best game of the season this Sunday.
Other sleepers:Vick Ballard, Felix Jones, Peyton Hillis

Wide Receivers - Philly Girl

Must Start: Vincent Jackson :TAM: vs. :MIN-NFL:
He has been on fire as of late with 4 TDs, 33 targets and an average of 127.3 yards over the last 3 games. Granted this all rides on Freeman, but with those numbers it seems that Freeman is looking to rely on Jackson.
Other Must Starts: Brandon Gibson, Eric Decker, Kevin Walter

Must Sit: DeSean Jackson :PHI-NFL: vs. :ATL-NFL:
This may be slightly self-serving but with the only undefeated team left in town to visit the fledgling Eagles, I am struggling to see anyone on the Eagles offense having a successful day. During the bye-week, the Eagles tried to address their failures by firing their defensive coordinator, however did nothing to address the 17 turnovers the offense has had. Granted the Eagles historically do well after their bye but the failure to address key concerns and league leading turnover stats leads me to believe that this will only be another miserable outing for the Eagles against a very well rounded :ATL-NFL: team.
Other Must Sits: all Philly WRs,  Carolina WRs

Sleeper: Randall Cobb :GB: vs. :JAC:
In the absence of Greg Jennings, Cobb is standing out as a solid option for Rodgers, who seems to be quite comfortable giving him looks. On Sunday, Cobb caught all 8 passes his way for 89 yards and 2 TDs.
Other Sleepers: Andre Roberts, Josh Gordon, Jeremy Kerley

Tight Ends - ProFSL

Must Start: Jimmy Graham  vs. :DEN:
I know what you're thinking.  Graham is always a must start.  However, injuries and possibly unavailability thwart the star players' chances for a lineup (see my comments below on Aaron Hernandez).  Graham is not a top 10 TE this year in most leagues this season.  On top of that, his injury status makes him questionable for the road game in Denver.  The Saints NEED a win to avoid falling to 2-5.  Denver has allowed the fifth most fantasy points to TEs in most scoring formats.  Start Graham and collect the fantasy points.

Must Sit: Kyle Rudolph :MIN-NFL: vs. :TAM:
One of the most productive tight ends this year put up a goose egg last week.  I took the liberty of starting him over Aaron Hernandez two weeks in a row and regretted it last week.  There is no excuse for no production.  The match-up isn't great this week either for Minnesota tight ends.

Sleeper: Anthony Fasano :MIA: vs. :NYJ:
The Jets are one of the worst teams against tight ends.  Fasano is hit or miss, but Miami has to expose any weak point they can get to help their rookie QB lead the team to a victory.  i like the Dolphins and Fasano in this match-up.

Defense - JMACisBACK

Must Start- :GB: vs :JAC:
Jax is without MJD, Gabbert has a torn labrum on non throwing shoulder and the PACK seem to be BACK. Look for this defense to tee off on whoever is at QB for the Jags and a sure fire top 5 def this week.

Must Sit- :DAL: vs :NYG:
Lee is probably out for the year, they always have coverage issues vs the Giants and I don't see why this game will be any different. These are not your father's Cowboys anymore and the Giants may be the best team in the NFL, Sit the Boys def this week

Sleeper- :DET-NFL: vs :SEA-NFL:
Detroit's defense looked pretty darn good vs the Bears on Monday night football. Seattle has a rookie QB ( albeit a good one), and a relatively weak WR core. Look for DET to finally turn things around in an upset this week vs SEA and their defense to be the main reason.

He is so frustrating to own..3 weeks in a row you get 1-2 catches a week, then you bench him..12 rec..188yds, 3TD's :puke: :puke:

Its like an every other week thing with him. I just dont understand how the teams best WR can be held in check and they still get 36 points. He has been frustrating all year based on his unpredictability. I still won this week without him so it wasnt a problem this week

Yeah, after last year I'm done with him..he always scores well over the course of the year b/c of those huge games..he's like DeSean Jackson in that regard.

  • izaman3: It really is
  • izaman3: With like 30 other GMs, you'll never really find someone that someone else hasn't found. Plus bidding wars are fun
    Today at 11:50:00 AM
  • izaman3: I can't imagine trying to find hidden gems for two teams like you Jonathan, its hard enough to fill one team with getting cash strapped
    Today at 11:51:25 AM
  • Jonathan: Luckily for me, I have been wasting roster spots for awhile.
  • snugerud: supplemental draft was best idea they put into fnhl. that was a big complaint of mine.
  • Jonathan: best idea, but it should of been right after FA. Surely would of not nominated my guys I did. Now I have to pay real money for them lol
    Today at 11:55:44 AM
  • izaman3: What would be awesome is if Fantrax had blind FA bidding, so it could seem team bids, but other teams couldn't. Like sort of like ebay how it lets you autobid up to a limit you set, that way players could essentially take their best offer and you wouldn't know immediately if you bid enough
    Today at 12:00:01 PM
  • snugerud: i actually had looked into a number of options like that for my own league
    Today at 12:07:49 PM
  • snugerud: never really found one i liked enough to proceed with it.  there is a bid system within fantrax but its a budget, it doesnt use real dollar amounts
    Today at 12:08:35 PM
  • snugerud: and cant be based on a teams available cap space
    Today at 12:08:50 PM
  • izaman3: I think I saw they added a feature where it tied your budget to your salary cap instead of it being a separate thing
    Today at 12:09:45 PM
  • izaman3: I'm excited for the FNHL supp draft next year, or I will be if Jonathan doesn't preemptive FA bid on anyone worth taking
    Today at 12:14:03 PM
  • Jonathan: I will and then everyone else will follow LOL
    Today at 12:15:59 PM
  • izaman3: haha, I really am trying not to, but you keep posting new guys. If that continues for the other positions I'll have to look forward to the supp draft in two years lol
    Today at 12:17:26 PM
  • Jonathan: I lack D, maybe I will have to waste a pick on one, there are a good number of defenders available to draft this year.
  • izaman3: I was thinking the same thing, and defense is hard to sure up in this league every team only have 6 D as opposed to 12 Fs on the ice each night, and 31 teams are all competing for those 6 and like the next 3 up
    Today at 12:19:57 PM
  • izaman3: I've got Chabot coming up soon, so that'll help me out soon. But my defense is weaker than most other teams and I hardly dedicated cap to D
    Today at 12:22:09 PM
  • Jonathan: My caps have 3 Dmen, and 2 of them were fairly recently traded for.
  • snugerud: not that I have seen Izaman.  I will look through
    Today at 12:24:11 PM
  • Jonathan: Oilers have 4, but 1 in likely to go back to russia. All sorts of problems on the blue line. Oilers do have 9 on the farm though. I knew I was gonna be short.
  • Jonathan: Really, spent last year attempting to rebuild my blue line in EDM, it looked much worse.
  • izaman3: I keep looking at the Oilers and thinking that they're stacking. They have so much promising talent
    Today at 12:27:30 PM
  • izaman3: stacked@
  • izaman3: My shallowness me think about trying to bid on a guy like Tim Heed, but I'd be better off trying to beat you for Hobbs, Thomas, Jaros, and everyone else lol
    Today at 12:30:43 PM
  • Jonathan: idk, pretty excited about our new alignment on the LW: Tkachuk, Foligno and Gaudreau
    Today at 12:31:07 PM
  • izaman3: Yeah, the Oilers major league roster and think its impressive and then I look at the minors compared to mine and feel a little inadequate lol
    Today at 12:34:08 PM
  • snugerud: do you always feel inadequate when you look down......the page
    Today at 12:35:58 PM
  • izaman3: If the Oilers had a starting Goalie in the next few years, I'd be scared. Woll looks solid but is a bit aways
    Today at 12:36:18 PM
  • izaman3: Sure snug, lots of books I read have people doing better things than me. Its easy to feel inadequate looking down at those pages. I'd be better off going to buy pants and feeling good looking at the mirror
    Today at 12:38:55 PM
  • Jonathan: I wonder if they go down to the seconds in determining 3 hrs lol
    Today at 12:48:21 PM
  • Jonathan: im out, be back later to nominate more guys for everyone to bid on
    Today at 12:50:12 PM
