RC - Please Weigh in on the Prado Waiver Claim
« on: August 08, 2012, 10:52:54 PM »
Please review the post below and voice your opinion on whether we should allow the Red Sox to be awarded Prado for nothing or extend leniency to Nick for allowing more than 72 hours to elapse before pulling back the waiver.

RC - Please Weigh in on the Prado Waiver Claim
« Reply #1 on: August 08, 2012, 11:04:06 PM »
I feel the Red Sox should be awarded Prado.  Waiver clocks were treated with 100% strictness in when something should be posted.  Only times in which we are lenient with waivers is when two teams make a deal.  As long as they post that they agreed to a deal then it can take some extra days after the initial 144 hours.

I view the two 72 hour clocks in waivers as strict as the 72 hour bid clock in free agency.

I tend to think twenty however long minutes is not that big of a deal. I do realize that it is key to follow the rules, but in the past we have given owners more than ample opportunity to make up for time lapses. I won't name them, but if forced to, I will. It happened several times during the off-season, and once more recently in the regular season. The penalties IMO were light in nature, akin to more of a wrist slap. I think it is best to work with the GM's especially when time is a consideration. Again, Paul and Rob can back me up on this, when in the past we have given GMs more than ample time to make up for any FA/Time misgivings.

I don't think there is a clear black and white answer to this, I honestly don't. It's not like the Braves missed the deadline by 3 days. It was 20 some odd minutes...he could of had the runs, or his wife was using the comp, or he just plain forgot. It happens, and again, the violation didn't cross the 60 minute barrier. To rain down fire and brimstone on another GM for a minimal lax in time management is not what we have done in the past. I really think it comes down to a judgement call. IMO, which doesn't hold as much weight as it used to, Prado should remain a Brave.

In the past PM's were sent out to GMs to make sure that everything was up to snuff and they were given the opportunity to right the wrong.

Prado should go to :BOS:. It's going to set a really bad precedent going forward if teams are allowed to bend this rule. There is also a question of what a good grace time period is. If 20 minutes is ok, then is 21? If 60 minutes is not ok, then is 59?

I do think it is good practice to use the RC in these cases.  I don't think we bent the rule on winners and losers with bid or waiver clocks.  Time was made lenient on secondary decision making such as contracts and drops.

I think there is a distinct difference between something like a FA bid in which you have never owned the player, versus missing a deadline on a player already in your possession.  Think of it as the difference between finding out that you did not really win the lottery after you thought you had versus never having played.  It is a psychological difference, but it is part of human nature.  What is the difference between not being able to pull back a waiver claim due to loss of internet versus not clearing the cap space on a player you won in FA?

Did NickF lose Internet access?

This was a perfect storm of waiting for an offer, traveling for work, and lack of internet.

Did NickF lose Internet access?

i'll explain everything here as i have explained to jeff and roy already in pms.. and just to be clear im 100% alright with whatever the RC decides on.. i wont have hard feelings

anyway im currently in israel traveling with my family, but i have had plenty of internet time at my hotel. On tuesday i had to leave for the day so i knew i would be without internet for around 24 hours.. I pmed jeff tuesday morning telling him i would be without internet but that i wanted to hear an offer from him. I was supposed to get back wednesday afternoon (morning in america), with enough time, i believed, to check his offer, possibly send a counter and decide whether or not i wanted to trade prado... Unfortunately I got stuck at an israeli border checkpoint leaving the west bank for three hours, and i honestly don't know what the holdup was... As soon as i got to my hotel i got on to rescind the waiver.

Again i completely understand if the RC decides to stick to the 72 hours. I shouldnt have left it that close anyway.  :toast:

Like I said before, because of the complexity of the moves, and the amount of moves in this league, then we must be willing to work with GMs. To have a completely obtuse line in the sand in regards to moves, in my mind, will turn many people off. I have been one of the more active members since joining this league, and even I have been lax in some of my drops.

League wide deadlines are one thing, but I think we need to have a certain amount of leeway when it comes to drops, waivers, FA signings. There are times when a FA sits in the queue for several days without a contract. Does that mean that we should instantly start removing draft picks from that GM? It may be a dangerous precedent to be lax, but it might be a far more dangerous precedent to be totally stringent on the policy when so many of us in this league aren't on at all times. But that's just me. I think if you start doing things like that you will get a negative response. These aren't standard add/drops...it isn't one click of the button. This is a totally different level of running a team, and not everyone has the capacity to vulture over their teams and the transactions they are involved in.

Setting line ups on a day to day basis, and meeting league wide deadlines, which have been known months in advance are completely different things than missing a contract signing or a waiver rescind by a few minutes. Again, just my opinion.

  • Jwalkerjr88: Idk if anyone remembers the 2021 class but it was weak on offense outside or the top 10-15. I dont regret the deal just learned and move on. As long as you have assets, you can mold your build how you want. Picks are usually the most valuable asset because most gms want in on a draft.
