This one is sticky.  The 72 and 144 hour clocks of the waivers are 100% strict like the 72 hour bid clock.  Unfortunately for the Braves, they had six days to rescind the waiver and did not do so.  Prado goes to the winning team.

In my opinion not awarding Martin Prado to Boston would set a bad precedent for deadlines in the league.  If you stretch the rules here and let one GM get by being 28 minutes late where do you draw the line. If I am 1 hour late to rescind a waiver is that too late? If I bid on a Free Agent 28 minutes after the 72 hour deadline is my bid still valid? What is the point in having a 72 hour deadline if it doesn't actually apply. Rules are rules and deadlines are deadlines.  They are written down and all GM's in the league should kno them.  They should be followed and enforced.

Hard clocks are for bidding, posting deals before deadlines, and the waiver clocks.

Soft clocks are for making roster adjustments.

I am sorry, but I disagree.  There is no mention of hard and soft clocks in the rules, and it seems highly questionable to create that standard now in my opinion.  I think the nuance here is that the team already owned Prado versus a FA bid whereby you are trying to acquire the player.  Functionally, you could make the argument that this is a roster move in the same sense that a trade would be.  I will run this by the RC if you insist.  I would welcome their weighing in on the matter.

4) A decision on the player must be made within 72 hours of the claim.  If, within such a time frame, an agreement wasn't posted by both parties NOR was the waive canceled by the waiving team, then the player's contract is considered to moved to the claiming team in exchange for nothing. 



There is no gray area within the rule wording is clear. The word must is used in decision within 72 hours. Then saying nothing posted player goes to claiming team cut and dry.

Jeff, there are two 72 hour periods.  A trade wasn't posted by the end of the second period.
