Poll

Pretty amazing that this is even a debate, but I could see one

Josh Hamilton 5-5 4HR 8RBi (O's)
8 (88.9%)
Joey Votto 4-5 3HR 6 RBI walk off GS (nats)
1 (11.1%)

First, I think it is a little more stressful to be a pitcher than a hitter on average. Secondly, there are several reasons why there aren't more 4 HR games (besides the fact that it is just hard to do) and they include:

1. The really good power hitters are usually walked once a game or so.
2. Hitters that already have 2-3 HRs in a game are more likely to get walked.

While these factors make it harder to hit 4 HRs because the pitcher takes it out of the hitters hand, it could be argued that there would be a lot more of these games if it was just talent and a luck based like perfect games for pitchers. For pitchers, they are in control of the game (for the most part, forget about managers for the sake of the argument) and get to call the shots. So, the perfect games are pretty much a result of just talent and luck unlike the 4 HR games.

I also voted Hamilton. Like Sam said in an earlier post, 4>3. Sure, the grand slam is nice and won the game, but Hamilton had an extra HR, two more rbi and went 5-5.

Here are 3 articles who have probably more eloquently voiced the Votto side than I have:

http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-joey-votto-20120514,0,1487879.story

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1183664-josh-hamilton-and-joey-votto-breaking-down-their-incredible-performances

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/votto-s-slam-is-game-changing-moment-of-the-week.html

All three articles give Hamilton the nod in the sheer numbers category (obviously), but the discussion is how much do you value the "clutch" factor is Votto's performance? The Yahoo! article actually did the best to voice this as they also mentioned how Votto's first HR in the 1st gave them the lead, his second HR tied the game in the 4th, and of course, his 3rd HR was a walk-off GS. It also talks about the "slow" start Votto was on before he entered the game (unlike Hamilton who was and is red-hot) along the skid the Reds were on. The LA Times article also included a poll that was about 50/50 after 700 votes.
