Quoting myself here: "Giving a GM the ability to match an offer would create more downward pressure on FA contracts. (Why bid on a player if you know you can match?) Ultimately, if you want your player back you can bid on him like everyone else."

But what about: "the idea of bringing extension values and free market values a little closer together. At the mid to upper ranks (the top 20?) I think extension values are at least 10% high and could be reduced to reflect the idea of hometown discount."

The reason our extension values don't exactly emulate the free market values is because our values are based solely on production, not on value to team, part of team's future, potential or any of that. A player like Victor Hedman from my team, he just signed a new contract with Tampa for $4.0m for 5 years but I just signed him for 2 more years at $0.9m because he production doesn't match his potential or value on the team as a shutdown defensemen. Or on the other side take Tavares that I had on my team, he had a very good year and was the 5th ranked center, so to re-sign I would owe him $7.9m so I release him to free agency and in free agency he should get closer to his actual contract of $5.5m.
The current system just makes you evaluate if the top scoring players are worth that much to you or not.
I would not be opposed to a change slightly in extensions but we need to come to values that are closer to our concept and doesn't mean that every team keeps their players every year.
I would not be opposed as well to when signing extensions to they have to be for a minimum of 2 years as it is a minor loophole in the rules.

I love the open market and higher extensions as it forces teams to change on a yearly basis. It opens the game to swing power quicker. Again, anaheim and chicago should look like completely different teams by the start of this season as opposed to the dominate powerhouse they were.

Completely agree.

I also completely agree, and I don't think a 10% reduction for the upper ranks would change this at all.

I think this is a very minor revision using Forward Rankings as the example.

1   8.7                  7.9
2   8.5                  7.6
3   8.3                  7.3
4   8.1                  7.0
5   7.9                  6.8
6   7.7                  6.6
7   7.3                  6.4
8   6.9                  6.2
9   6.5                  6.0
10   6.1                5.6
11   5.9                5.4
12   5.8                5.3
13   5.7                5.2
14   5.6                5.1
15   5.5                5.0
16   5.4                4.9
17   5.3                4.8
18   5.2                4.7
19   5.1                4.6
20   5.0                4.5
21-25 4.5             4.2
26-30 4.0             3.8
31-35 3.5             3.4
36-40 3.0             3.0
41-50 2.5             2.5
51-60 2.0             2.0
61-70 1.5             1.5
71-80 1.3             1.3
etc...

I think this speaks to the idea of proprietary interest and hometown discount without adding clauses for matching or compensation. It will also give slightly greater pause to some GM's considering releasing players to free agency but nothing radical.

Consider that the extension value for James Neal would be $7.6m instead of $8.5m.

I thought that was the basic idea behind the discounts a few teams wwin - either a home town discount or a free agent that really wants to play for team whatever. But my feeling on extensions is this: if the player is worth it, the team will shell out the cash. If the team does not have the cap, that is their own fault for not keeping that players raise in mind. I wouldn't mind a minor chance, but cutting off a mill off of first and so on is too much. Keeping your players should cost more than acquiring a free agent.

Any discussion on these adjustments? I would not be opposed to this.

I would like it to stay the same or have bigger gaps between 10th-11th and 20th-21st. So your top 10 get elite player type contracts and values drop much faster.
