I'm for extensions, but I do think there should be a limit, say max 2 extensions a year per team and no more than 'x'# of extensions can be carried on a roster. This will help limit the thinning of the FA pool and give reason to pause and think before handing out an extension.

Only problem I would see with that is that it would encourage people to sign players for huge, lengthy contracts because they know that they can't resign them.

If we want people to let their players go into free agency instead of extending everyone, all we need to do is do what MLB already does.  We need to give them compensation for letting their players walk.  If people can get a pick in the amateur draft, they would be very willing to let some of their guys go into free agency.

I agree that by adding extensions to the league we are going to cut in to the FA pool, as an example of how this could be done to limit potential damage I will point out how this is done in another dynasty league that I have been in for a few years.

Example:
Each team may extend up to three players every two seasons, no team may carry more than six extended players on their roster at a time, no matter how they came to be on your roster (this can effect your trading practices as well), contract extensions mirror the players real life contact as shown on http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/ (Cot's) but instead of the back loaded or front loaded deals that real life players get, the extension is AAV based with same number of years that the real life player received, option years either become automatically guaranteed, or we find a way to make them options but with a salary kick say 10 - 20% per year.

I agree that compensation for allowing guys to go FA can help with getting talent into the FA pool, but there would have to be a ranking system used, basically we'd need to type the FA pool and set up a guild line for how compensation is done.
http://baseballmonster.com/ this site can be helpful with this, but it's not as simple as just listing all of the MLB and taking the numbers, we'd need to categorize the FA pool either by individual position or blocks of positions, then you have to weed out all the non-FA guys, and so forth.

Just thought I'd rehash this topic since we've had quite a few new guys. Seems like the consensus is that extensions are a good idea, but there needs to be a limit, and there should be compensation for lost free agents.

I'm going to propose maximum 1 or 2 extensions per year.

The contract value will either be based on real life salary, or some sort of formula based on statistics.

FA compensation... I need to think about. We need something fair, but I'm hesitant to do anything overly complicated and time consuming.

One way you might be able to do compensation is to relate it somehow to the players contract-extension value.

Just to throw out random numbers:
Extension value of (less than $5M) = No pick compensation

Extension value of ($5M - $9.99M) = Compensation Round selection

Extension value of ($10M - $14.99M) = 2nd Round selection and Comp Round selection

Extension value of ($15M+) = 1st Round selection and Comp Round selection

... This is just my vague idea.

I am ok either way. If we do go with extensions, two thoughts:

1) I don't think players should not be able to make less than the previous year. Players in the real MLB are not going to take less money to remain with their team (except in rare circumstances) unless they have tried the free agent market.

2) Would we want to consider some kind of limitations?  I'd hate to see the free agent pool be completely closed off from players that will help improve teams.

Off the top of my head and repeated what has been said

1. Option year needs to be more then the average annual salary. A set percentage for either all or based on salary level.

2. Limit options for each team for each year.

3. Think about making options tradable.

4. Draft pick compensation for dropped and signed FA. But not sure if I would go beyond supplemental between second and third, and I wouldn't penalize a team by costing them a draft pick for signing a free agent.

1. I agree with this for the most part.  Options should be a percentage more than salary level although I would be up for discussion on what that percentage should be.

2. I agree that we should keep it to 2 or 3 per year at the most

3. I'm Ok with trading options as well.

4. I think that the compensation should be based on value level of the player lost.  I would consider compensating top tier free agents lost with a supplemental draft after Round 1, but these players would be very few and far between.  Other players could be awarded other supplemental picks based on value.  Perhaps tiers based on a post-season draft cheat sheet put out prior to the beginning of our amateur draft for next season?  Just talking out loud but it would seem like a decent starting point.
