##### How is WAR calculated?
« on: March 21, 2010, 05:54:12 PM »
I noticed WAR is not in the library yet.  How is this defined, formula-wise?  Is it based on a ratio of runs created for the player per runs scored by the team?  How does it take defense into account?  What about pitchers?  I am pretty new to this!

Here is what I found at a blog..

How is WAR calculated?  If you want the detailed (yet very understandable) version, check out the links at the bottom of the page.  Dave Cameron does a great job of walking you through the process step-by-step, so I highly recommend reading that series.  The short answer, though, is that as follows:

* Offensive players - Take wRAA and UZR (which, if you remember, are both in runs format) and add them together.  Add in a positional adjustment, since some positions are tougher to play than others.  And then convert the numbers so that they’re based not league average, but on replacement level (which again, is the value a team would lose if they had to replace that player with a minor leaguer or someone from the waiver wire).  Convert the run value you have to wins (10 runs = 1 win) and voila, finished!
* Pitchers – Where offensive WAR used wRAA and UZR, pitching WAR uses FIP.  Based on how many innings a pitcher threw, FIP is turned into runs form, converted to represent value above replacement level, and is then converted from runs to wins.

Thanks bridgestone... it looks like we need to add that run-stat to the library.

• Daddy: Apparently the MLB has put forth the idea of reducing the number of minor-league teams by more than a quarter (42 teams would be cut in the reported proposal). Additionally, MLB's proposal would reduce the draft to 20 rounds, reduce the number of contracted players in each organization, and alter the structure -- with some affiliates moving up or down in level.
