Blue Jackets Cap hit
« on: September 21, 2021, 12:42:59 PM »
I believe the cap hit on the Dumoulin trade was taken from this season instead of 2023-24.  Can someone look into that, please?  It is showing that my cap is 93.4, which is down from 96.9.

Thanks!

Kraken trade:

RW Julien Gauthier $0.5m (2022-23)
-0.5m paid for current 2021-22 season
G Connor Ingram (minors)

Blue Jackets trade:

D Brian Dumoulin $3.5m (2023-24)
-3.5m paid for 2023-24 season

So, you are trading cap in just the 23-24 season, not UNTIL the 23-24 season?

I don't think I've seen a cap trade like that before, for a future year.

@Vik  @ldsjayhawk

Correct, agreed upon deal was only for 23-24 season.

Can I trade cap for 2031? Just kidding but it illustrates a point for the sake of conversation.

Cap trades have always been anchored to the present and I would think they have to have some sort of limiter (similar to max contract years) to prevent trading cap in perpetuity.

I'm open to new ideas but we've kind of always just gone with convention. I don't think anyone wants to see me trade away 10 years worth of cap space starting next decade.

The bolded info below is from the league rules under trading. You can only trade cap space or cash up to the value of contracts you are trading away. So you can't just trade excess cap space away for an asset. You can only send money with for a contract already on your books. If you want to send $5m of cap space you need to also send a $5m contract. With max length contracts being 5 years you really can't trade cap space for more then 5 years from now.

***When trading cash the value of the cash must be less than or equal to the value of player contracts that are also being traded.  Also the value of future cash must be equal to the value of future player contracts.  (added 10/29/15)***

When cash is exchanged it cannot be attached to a contract.  This means that if you're trading a player with a $5m contract and part of the deal is you're paying that contract, the contract for that player does not change, you are sending your trade partner $5m towards his salary cap.

Thanks for this Shooter, I should have looked. I still think we need to be clear about how far in the future we are trading cap space though. IMO cap traded should start at earliest opportunity but that's just my opinion based on convention to date.

I agree with Slack.  Trading future cap makes me uncomfortable even if that rule keeps it in the 5 year term.  I'm kinda blown away that after 10 years nobody tried to exploit this!

Definitely need a conversation on this, but I'm inclined to allow the current deal either way - it's not the trading GM's fault that it's not addressed.

Removed the cap exchange for this year and entered it in the log for 23/24.

Let's continue the discussion in the new thread.
