Giants negotiated this trade with a few things in mind. First, although Justin Turner is having a good year, he?s 36 years old and Gio Urshela is 29 and has comparable stats. With that, his contract is $14.0m and Urshela?s is $10.0m. Second, Cavan Biggio will probably lose his MI eligibility at seasons end and be a CI-OF, two positions the Giants have a number of players. JP Crawford is a young, productive MI and will definitely fill a roster need because Crawford and Solano are not getting any younger (even though Brandon Crawford is having a career year). Third, Justin Upton will provide some insurance and OF depth and is more productive, even as an older player, than Marwin Gonzalez. Finally, losing Yoelqui Cespedes is tough, but even though he?s highly rated, prospects are prospects, and he plays a position where the Giants are set for the next few years. Miles Mikolas will probably see success again when he?s healthy, but he won?t help the Giants in 2021. Edgar Encarnacion will be bought out and was only included as a trade incentive.
