Scoring for Pitchers and IP limit
« on: September 14, 2011, 03:36:06 PM »
Guys,

Let's wrap up discussions on these two issues sooner rather than later, because free agency will be here before we know it, and it will be affected by what we decide.  The IP limit should be easy, because we can re-poll the owners.  Scoring for pitchers could be one of those topics like social security reform that takes a while.

We should go with a set number of starts per week instead of the ip limit

Since this is a zero-sum league meaning all MLB teams are represented ,and teams don't play more than 1 game per week, you could make a reasonable argument that the limit should be no higher than 7 GS per week.  Remember, in order for 1 team to have more than 7 GS per week, another team would have less than that number.

This is what I argued for all along.  You could get extra innings from your bullpen, but the starters is the meat and potatoes.  This would force GMs to pick and choose.  The scoring remains the same because it forces pitchers on the bench just like some hitters are on the bench.  Bill James' ratios are maintained.

7 GS per week is fine if we have to set limits.  Although IMO it actually hurts the small market teams rather than helping them.  The large market teams will simply have five $20m SPs in their starting rotation and not bother with the second tier pitchers.

I play in a league that allows 9 starts per week. It works out great. On average you get 50 innings from your starters.

I respecfully disagree for two reasons.  That same argument could be made for everyday players and doesn't seem to have prevent some really good small market teams like the As and Brewers from doing well.  Second, that's the same obstacle our real-life counter-parts go through every day.  Uh oh.  Now, I expect someone to tell me that this this is not real life!

Also, depth goes a long way with injuries.  Look at the 2011 FGM Cardinals.

Big market teams will trot out a bunch of $20M starters, but that's just part of the game as a small market team.  I have also thought our limit should be in the 7 GS range, and would certainly be in favor.

I am ok with GS limits. 8 sounds like a good number to me: we have an extra batting spot so there should also be an extra starter.
