NOP Media/Press Release

Listened to all offers on non-Kawhi assets.

If you have an offer hit me up.

Still have cap space for the time being, but that could change soon.

The New Orleans Pelicans held a press conference today to introduce their new GM: Billy

A few select quotes from the new GM:

"I feel very fortunate to be in this position, this organization has some great young talent and an expectation to be in the playoffs every year"

"4 winning seasons in a row is great, but our goal is to get past the mid-40 win total and have some series in the playoffs with home court advantage"

"We are all very excited to see Andre Drummond, who has taken his game to the next level, play a full season with a healthy Kawhi Leonard..."

"Well yes, other GM's are welcome to inquire about trades.  We are always open to discussions"

"If you'll all excuse me, I need to go back to reading Larry Coon's Salary Cap FAQ and the 37 page thread FAQ(opening post updated)"

After the long-held belief that John Wall would seek a 2 + 1 deal this July have been confirmed by his agent, the excitement in the city of New Orleans has increased to another level. Just this morning several "come to New Orleans, John" and "Kawhi + Andre + John = RINGS" billboards have popped up along interstates and secondary roads alike..

New Orleans Pelicans summer round-up!

The celebration stated early in free agency for the Pelicans when John Wall signed for 2 years plus a player option forming a formidable big 3 with Kawhi Leonard and Andre Drummond.

The team then had to buck up to retain Josh Richardson and matched the Suns' offer of 4 years starting at $16,200,000.  Robert Covington proved too expensive to retain - signing with PHX for the same amount.

PJ Tucker then signed a 3 year deal starting at ~$11M (year 3 team option) which may be an overpay in hindsight, however Pelican management had seen Trevor Ariza and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute leave the real Houston Rockets and rumblings of Carmelo to Houston had not been heard yet.  Tucker does bring the unique SF, C positional flexibility to the team.

Pelicans GM Billy believes Ersan Ilyasova signing for 2 years at the Room MLE will be a very team friendly deal, and adds to the thin frontcourt.

The roster rounds out with the veteran minimum signings of Maxi Kleber and Jonas Jerebko, trade acquisitions Frank Mason, Sterling Brown & Dillon Brooks, and rookies Robert Williams and Justin Jackson.

Luke Kennard and Guershon Yabusele remain as holdovers from last season.

Pelicans projected opening day line-up:
PG: John Wall
SG: Luke Kennard
G: Josh Richardson
SF: Kawhi Leonard
SF: Dillon Brooks
PF: Ersan Ilyasova
C: Andre Drummond
PF/C: PJ Tucker

Looking back, GM Billy admits he probably made a mistake trading Eric Gordon for peanuts.  He was hopeful to be able to sign max FA like Wall and retain Robert Covington along with Josh Richardson (which would have led to not signing PJ Tucker) but did not realize the team had Early Bird rights and not Full Bird rights.  Lesson learned for the rookie GM but the hope is that this team will still be able to make some noise in the West.  New Orleans is looking forward to training camp!

The Pelicans held a surprise press conference this morning as they prepare for their 1st preseason game to announce that Mike Krzyzewski is leaving Duke University to accept the Head Coach position of the New Orleans Pelicans.  Terms of the contract were not discussed.  Krzyzewski has assembled a 1100-338 record at the collegiate level (most NCAA wins in history) and a 75-1 mark as the head of Team USA.  Many believe that Coach K's years of experience with Team USA will prove beneficial as he looks for success on the NBA level.

We are open for trade talks in New Orleans.

If you want some extra ammo for the playoff push, let's discuss Jonas Jerebko (SF/PF 51 fppg), Ersan Ilyasova (SF/PF 49 fppg) or Dillon Brooks (SG/SF 31 fppg).

If you are not competing and have a good contributor you'd like to move I would also consider trading rebuilding assets.

The team is at a bit of a crossroads and a decision which way to head has not yet been decided.

2018-2019 Season Round-Up

Record: 54-28  6th in West

Playoffs Round 1: Pelicans beat Warriors 2173.1 - 2007.32

Playoffs Round 2: Clippers beat Pelicans 2255.98 - 1414.72

Summary: Pre trade deadline the decision was made to make a strong playoff push.  This was highlighted by trading John Wall who had ruptured his achilles tendon for Kyle Lowry. The Pelicans came into the playoffs hot and had the highest score league-wide in Round 1.  Unfortunately things fell apart in the 2nd Round.  While Wall had been the organizations big offseason signing, the trade to move him once again proved ownership's willingness to do what it takes to put a contender on the floor.

Team MVP: Andre Drummond  8144 points (103/g)

Best Value: PJ Tucker 5946 points (72.5/g) at $11,070,403.  SF, PF & C eligibility

Biggest Offseason Question: Will Kawhi Leonard  (110/g) stay in New Orleans after he opts out of the final year of his contract?

  • Daddy: Apparently the MLB has put forth the idea of reducing the number of minor-league teams by more than a quarter (42 teams would be cut in the reported proposal). Additionally, MLB's proposal would reduce the draft to 20 rounds, reduce the number of contracted players in each organization, and alter the structure -- with some affiliates moving up or down in level.
