Pens need to improve our blueline. We like Johnson's points-per-game, even on a bad Colorado team, and we're counting on him staying healthy this season. If he gets traded, even better. Or maybe Sakic can turn around the Avalanche.

We also like the depth Dumoulin brings still on his EL contract. Both contracts work within our cap structure and will help us not be stupid (or at least as stupid) during free agency.

The 1st rounder is steep, but we're still in win now mode. The Canes are quickly building and hopefully these pieces help them on their journey. They also take our bad Lupul contract (speaking of stupid fa signings), but they can easily ditch that this summer if they so choose.

Carolina confirms

Neither guy was in Carolinas plans beyond 2018 and we wanted to free up some cap space to give us some flexibility on the fa and trade markets.

This hurts the depth on d for the time being but I feel I have some options in the minors who might be ready very soon plus the fourth pick in the draft which could be used on a defenseman who could step right in.

Also as part of the trade Carolina will extend lupal for .2 2018 and immediately buy him out for .1 effective when contracts rollover in august
