Everything that i have found says that he has retired from the NHL but only that his contract remains because of the cap hit.  Its really a 50/50 in this case.

With that said, i have always been a fan of no cap relief on retirement,  if you are going to sign a 36year old to a 4 year contract, deal with it.  ha ha.

I just want to find something concrete that says he signed retirement papers. Maybe he needed to wait to sign paperwork until after the trade.

And I just signed Anderson to a four year deal and the only reason I did that was because we have extension contract minimum years and retirement cap relief.  :agent:

I'm inclined to change the rule to treat players leaving for the KHL the same as retired players. It's kinda hard to arbitrate this retirement thing.

I would support this. In any case that a player heading to KHL returned he would be a FA and all teams would be able to bid on him so I don't see the harm to be honest.

I'd be ok with ridding the player if they bolt to KHL and it would be up to the GM if they want to keep or release.

Like in the example of a young player going to KHL, like Khoklachev in Boston, as a GM I would hold onto him in case he returned, but could also have the option to release him and if he came back he is fair game to all other GM in the league

Don't get me started on Khoklachev.  He'd be a legit point producer on any other NHL squad.  The Bruins suck at everything right now.

My interpretation of the rule is that he hasn't officially retired and there is still a cap hit so the same should apply to our league. However I am in favor of some kind of KHL rule like Rob has brought up.

Also if he officially retires or we find proof that he did then the hit should come off the books in our league.

I like the idea if a player retires or bolts to the KHL/other league you can release for free, or keep their contract and their rights.  Nice and simple.

Everything says he retired, and just his contract was traded.  That is good enough for me to say he officially retired either way.

I was just talking out loud.  I had no intention that , that rule would change.

This is updated to the Lecavalier retirement - not sure what their source is for this in particular:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015%E2%80%9316_NHL_transactions#Retirement

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016%E2%80%9317_NHL_transactions#Retirement

Datsyuk is on the retirement list for 16-17...idk what that means.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I'm going to make an executive decision to honor the free drop under the retirement rule.  Due to the ambiguity of NHL retirement I think the rule needs to be changed.  A more black and white approach would be to either not allow free drops for any retired players OR allow for both retired and players moving overseas, at least if they're over 35 years old.  And since we have minimum years for contract extensions, I don't think removing the free retirement drops entirely is fair.  Therefore the rule needs to be changed to allow free drops for all retirees or KHL defectors.  I'll post about it on the main board.
