Note sure where that number is coming from Rick, but it's 16.5M. Like I already mentioned in a PM, Hank has 9.5M coming off his books just from Cordero and Lowe's contracts. There is a further 8M saving from the Crawford deal. There are some GMs who think along the line of "why pay Weeks now when I get just bid for him on the free agent market?"That logic is pretty flawed in my opinion. Corey has a 75M war chest, Kris has at least 30M to spend, Jeff has about 20M to spend, and I have at least 15M even if I resign Weeks. There is no way Weeks will be signed for less than the current market value in the open market. Last offseason, Nishioka went for 38M. It's more than reasonable to assume Weeks will get at least double that.
The $20.5m comes from the salary for Weeks plus the $4m Detroit is paying you to take Crawford. Simple math Howe.War Chest mean nothing. I've got roughly $40m to spend this off season, even if I resign my potential FA's, so what?IMO-You are taking advantage of a GM in a bad situation and that is detrimental to the league.
Is that why Fielder, with no contract, fetched Hosmer/Lamb/Weglarz in FGM?Is that why Lee, with less than a year left, fetched Smoak? When Kotchman was traded, he was coming off a .296/.372/.476 season as a 24 y/o.
Good luck Hank! Apparently you have a plan to finance this deal and that's great. I'd just be careful in my dealings with Howe. He will insure that he comes out with the better end of the deal.
