new york sends a few guys down the subway
« on: June 01, 2011, 08:32:30 PM »
the yankees pack up

OF Suzuki, Ichiro, $18m (2012)
SP Turner, Jacob, $2m (2012)
and pay 6 mil on ichiro in 2011 and 2012
for
MI Castillo, Luis, $6.5m (2011)
SP Harvey, Matt, $0.5m (P-n/a)

i do this move mainly to free up cap room, also harvey is a very solid spec i know turner is unreal but to free up cap space you have to give up something.

LOOK out for the mets in the next few years!!!!

The mets send harvey a top 50 spec to NYY along with the dead weight of castillo to acquire a personal fav in Jacob turner and in return we take on the big contract of ichiro.

After fielding offers to take on bad contracts, the mets settled on this on this deal and the change to acquire turner.

thanks Daniel

When posting trades you must post players, position, contract terms for both teams.  Please post these for this deal and then the TC can evaluate.

I understand the salary dump, but Ichiro has averaged around 3000 pts. each season, regardless of regression, and Turner is a top 40 prospect on every sheet I've seen.

Castillo isn't even on a real life team, and thus has zero trade value.  I've seen Harvey on plenty of sheets, but not a top 50 sheet.

Again, I understand the salary dump, but this is a bit excessive.  I'll be the first to admit I made a pitch to the Yankees regarding Turner, but the failed pitch has no effect on my vote, and I will abstain from trying to pursue him if this trade doesn't go through to ensure my standing.

Harvey has been excellent in High A ball this year.  He is 6-2, 2.50 ERA 54 IP 45 H 18 BB 62 K.  He is only 1 level lower than Turner and will be pitching in Citifield.  Harvey's numbers in the FSL are a little better than Turner's were last year there.  Turner will be a top 25 prospect next year, but Harvey could be a top 100 if he keeps this up, so the difference is not as much as you'd think.

Roy, nothing I said was out of context in my rationale behind my vote, and I'm not doubting Harvey's a decent prospect.

You make it sound like A and AA ball are one and the same. Harvey's numbers are good, but Turner's speak for themselves also.

Also, even if Turner and Harvey were equals, Ichiro for money would be an even deal? I feel that's a gross underestimate of Ichiro.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this deal. Harvey is being just as good as Turner. Ichiro averages 2400 points and will cost me 12m to be an average at best OF in this league. The yanks clear a ton of cap room next year that can be used to bring 2 guys with the same production as Ich. Plus they clear 8m immediately to be used for them to acquire a player to help them make a push for the championship.

The 2 aboves trades are proof of trades of salary dump. The first I moved Lackey for a Catcher Navarro that has no shot at a starting job, and John Maine, whos career is over.  That trade is the same as this. The second involves the phills moving blanton rodney and kottares to SD for Luebke. A clear salary dump to resign konerko. As blanton for luebke is even close because luebke is a reliever.

The committee's job is to be cosistant with all deals. The above is just examples of allowing salary dump. This trade isnt vetoable.

This list http://www.baseball-intellect.com/top-100-baseball-prospects-of-2011/      ranks turner at 26 and Harvey at 56. Keep in mind Harvey is on a P-NA contract. Where Turner is not. Harvey is going to be cheaper and easier to lock up than Turner will be as well.

I have to side with Jake on this one.  It boils down to Ichiro for a salary dump.  I vote no

Corey the two trades you have posted are fine examples of salary dumps, but I don't think they are the same as this case since the players involved were of a much different nature. Lackey was absolutely worthless, while Ichiro still holds some value (And we all know hitters are worth more than pitchers). The other trade doesn't fit either since it was done in January and the salary cap space was probably needed for FA. Right now there are no FAs that require that the Yanks clear that much cap room and they are still fighting with the fact that they have more players than they can hold. Which forces them to drop players for every FA signing. It makes more sense for them to clear cap at the end of the season or closer to the trade deadline. It would make even more sense if it was a small market team sending Ichiro packing. Still, I understand how difficult it is to get rid of large contracts, especially with so few teams having any cap room at all. Also, The points regarding the accompanying players are perfectly valid. It can certainly be argued that Harvey could develop into someone better than Turner and that he has a much more favorable contract.

I am not sure which way I would vote, it is borderline. I would had probably asked to hear more before deciding, but since it looks like there are two votes against already, it should probably be renegotiated. The problem seems to lay in sending Ichiro for nothing and without even dumping the entire salary. Maybe another prospect or useful player would help. Or negotiating the money differently.
