Free Agency - 2 way contracts
« on: March 30, 2011, 02:34:00 AM »
Propose starting next free agency that this works same way as the other 2 way contracts except you can only give 2 years as a max
0 - 39 games - 2 year 2 way
40+ - 1 way

Thoughts?
Would to many teams poach young talent this way?

I was planning on grabbing some young guys like this and while I love the idea I think that it might reduce the value of draft picks by a lot.

I like this idea a lot. I don't think poaching is a good word as not every young player will pan out to be a successful NHL player. Also, every team has a chance to bid on any given player from the Free Agent market, so if one team gets a lot of good young talent it's not as if the other 17 GMs in this league didn't have a chance to bid on the player(s) as well.

On another note though, as Miku said, this could very well diminish the value of draft picks, especially where the trade market is involved.

True, but then with the amount of room teams will have in the minor league and the ability to go out and just sign two-way players then the point of draft picks is almost useless except for the top 10-15 picks as they might be the players who might be playing in the league sometime soon. If we make it so that the only way to get two-way players are through draft picks it will make them all that much more valuable. I think that we should only be able to sign players with no contract that we got from drafting, trading a team who drafted the player, or players we already have with no contracts should be able to be signed to two-way deals. I would enjoy it if there was a reason to draft well instead of just signing some young FA's and never having to draft other then the first 10 picks.

Either that or make it so that if they are signed to a two-way contract through FA they would cost more then normal giving people the incentive to draft and only take two-way players from FA if they have no other options. I would probably rather this option because then if people don't draft or draft well they can still get some two-way players just at an increased cost.

I think having 2 way contracts in free agency would actually increase the value of draft picks. Draft picks are the only players that you can pick up without possibly getting into a bidding war this making draft picks way more valuable because you can by pass the bidding war and if you draft correctly their won't be much talent in the free agency to sign to 2 way contracts in a couple years except for the players that were not taking in the draft which everyone had a fair chance at getting.

I think it should only be 2 ways with draft picks and not free agents.

I asked this before and it didn't get a positive response, but I'll ask it again. What if we make the two way contracts cost extra for free agents? Say a million?

I like the idea of younger players getting the option of a two way contract, as that will equal the rookie contract players get when they first sign with a team.

But if we are all worried about the value of draft picks, I say we make it cost something to get the two way contract... Kind of like a waiver toll.

For example:
I won a player at 1.2 million, and I want him to have a two way contract. To make it a two way contract, it would cost another million per year. So his contract would be a two way contract worth 1.6M a year (1.2/2 + 1).

I like this idea minus the fact that it is a million every year what about a million added on to the total contract value so 500 k per year???

I say a million, as that will help keep the two way contracts to players who are just relief players and not high profile players worth a lot of dough.

I like the idea, this was what I was thinking also and I like the idea of a million per year. If you draft well and get lots of no contract players in your minors you can sign them cheap for a few years and not have to worry about the million extra. If you don't draft well then you have to pay a decent chunk more for these types of contracts as they are players you will probably only be using here and there anways. If you are losing a player due to placing them on IR or trades etc, you will probably have at least a mil cap space extra anyways for the time being and if you don't then you should have drafted better or traded for a cheap two-way player that someone else drafted. All in all if we make the price a decent chunk more like a million then it creates a whole new higher value of prospects and drafting.
