The Charlotte Hornets Return to the NBA
« on: June 29, 2014, 07:35:43 PM »
After 12 years, the Charlotte Hornets have returned to the NBA. Today the name of Charlotte’s original NBA franchise is back as the Charlotte Bobcats have officially re-branded as the Charlotte Hornets.

"Today is truly an historic day for our franchise, our city and our fans as we mark the official return of the Charlotte Hornets,” said Hornets Sports & Entertainment Chairman Michael Jordan. “Thanks to our fans who were the driving force behind the Hornets name returning.  We are thrilled to be able to bring the Hornets name back to the Carolinas."

Jordan also announced the departure of President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins
"Rod’s strong points are working with the coaches and the trainers, traveling with the team,” Jordan said. One of (Higgins’) strong points is not negotiating, leveraging teams. Sometimes when teams would call (proposing trades), they’d bypass Rod to get to capcardo."

Jordan’s decision gives more power to General Manager capcardo.

"A year ago, when I took this job, I promised to the fans that better times would be coming soon," said General Manager capcardo. "We started working diligently, and although the results on the court last season were not what the community in Charlotte and all Hornets fans deserve, we started a foundation that culminates in the present day. This is the day where the future, and the better days we have promised, start."

As part of the festivities, the team's new uniforms and playing court design were unveiled, followed by a press conference where the team's new coaching staff was announced.

"We are proud to present Jim Boylen as the next Head Coach of the Charlotte Hornets," announced capcardo. "Jim has worked under some of the greatest coaches in the history of this league in Rudy Tomjanovic and Gregg Popovich, and also in College Baskeball as the top assistant of Coach Tom Izzo in Michigan and as the Head Coach of the University of Utah. He is a coach that truly loves to get on the floor and work with players and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty with game preparation.”

“The opportunity to join the Charlotte Hornets and to be part of this franchise with an incredibly bright future is a great honor,” Boylen said. “I approach this opportunity with gratitude and humility and am committed to doing everything I can to help the Hornets become a championship-caliber team.”

Joining Boylen’s coaching staff are former Utah Jazz Head Coach Tyrone Corbin; former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Ime Udoka; former Brooklyn Nets assistant coach Mario Elie; and former Xavier University assistant coach Travis Steele.

“We have assembled an amazing group of basketball minds. Our focus is to keep improving and get to the top of this league, and our coaching staff shares the same values ,” said capcardo. “It’s going to be an exciting journey.”

Hornets officially introduces Marcus Smart

Hornets rookie Marcus Smart was at the team's practice facility Monday to be introduced as the newest members of the franchise. Joined by General Manager capcardo and Head Coach Jim Boylen he was presented with his jersey and fielded his first questions as professional basketball player.

Marcus started talking about his competitiveness, and how it is part of his nature.

"I grew up being that type of person, willing to do whatever it takes," said Smart. "I want to shut down my opponent, or at least try. That's the person I am and I take a lot of pride in that."

capcardo later stated that it was exactly that competitiveness, among other things, that piqued his interest during pre-draft evaluations.

"I think there were two things that stood out to me and one was Marcus' competitiveness. I love how he fights with bigs. I love how he rebounds and I think he has a great deal of potential of improving as a great pick and roll player offensively. I think his shooting wasn't as good as he would have liked it or what it needs to be to be the NBA player we think he can become but I know he'll put in the time and his mechanics are good so I have a great deal of confidence in Marcus' work ethic to make that happen."

"Listening to Marcus talk, and it also stood out to me during the evaluation process, he gets it," Boylen said. "He gets that there's a lot of work that goes into it. And it's about the name on front of the jersey and all those things."

Dragic, Johnson, Henderson introduced in Charlotte; Korver, Crawford acquired

When the then-Charlotte Bobcats finished the 2013-2014 season with an abysmal 7-75 record, it looked like the Charlotte Hornets return would be just a name change.

But GM capcardo had a plan.

Starting with Andrew Bogut's extension, trades for future picks and other assets, the acquisition of Al Jefferson late in the season, to the selection of Marcus Smart in the draft, the goal was to make the Charlotte Hornets return as a highly-competitive team. And two huge steps on this direction were taken over the last couple of days.

After announcing the trade that sent Al Jefferson, Jason Richardson and future picks to Miami for Goran Dragić Amir Johnson and Gerald Henderson, the Hornets announced another trade today, now with the San Antonio Spurs. G/F Kyle Korver and G Jamal Crawford will join the Hornets, with F Otto Porter, C Vitor Faverani, the 32nd pick in this year's draft and a future 2nd round pick going San Antonio's way.

The trio acquired yesterday was introduced to the local media today.

"I want to welcome Goran, Amir and Gerald to the Hornets family. We are happy they are here, and w wish a long period of success for the three of them individually and, most importantly, collectively, as part of our organization," said capcardo. "We also like to thank Al Jefferson and Jason Richardson for their time here, the professionalism, and wish them nothing but success in Miami."

"It's a great feeling," Dragić said. "We had a great year last season in Miami, and I hope to carry it on here. I was fortunate to reach the finals and unfortunately we lost, but now it is a fresh start as part of a team aiming to reach new goals."

"This is a team that clearly wants to win, win now, man...I love the opportunity to take part of this re-birth of the Charlotte Hornets," said Amir Johnson.

For Henderson, it is actually a homecoming, as he was drafted by Charlotte but left the team last season. Now he is back, looking to enjoy a lot more success than in his first stint with the then-Bobcats. Henderson guarantees the Hornets will be much improved next season, but wasn't ready to make a prediction on how many games they'll win.

"That's a tough question," Henderson said. "It's hard to put numbers on a situation like this. I know this year will be better. We'll be much improved. But to put a number on it and put added pressure on yourself isn't really fair."

capcardo declined to discuss the acquisition of Korver and Crawford today, just mentioning that "there will be another press conference in the next couple of days, and then we will discuss about it."

Busy days in Charlotte these days.

Hornets revamp roster; will they keep Kanter?

With a big part of their core players becoming free agents this offseason, there was a strong chance the Charlotte Hornets would start the 2015-2016 season with a very different outlook. And that is exactly what happened.

With G/Fs Kyle Korver and Jamal Crawford, and F/C Amir Johnson all moving on as free agents, the Hornets looked to use the cap space to find younger options while assembling their roster.

First, with 5 picks in the 2015 draft, 2 in the top 20, the Hornets selected C Myles Turner and G Jerian Grant in round 1. Turner especially was not a player at a position of need, but GM capcardo stayed true to the philosophy of selecting the best player available. In the second round, G Pat Connaughton, C Christian Wood and C Robert Upshaw were selected. It is unclear if they will make the roster for next season, but all offer a good dose of upside.

During free agency, the biggest acquisition was PF Kenneth Faried, acquired through a Sign and Trade deal with the New York Knicks. F Mike Scott, F Willie Reed and G Jabari Brown were also signed to provide depth.

They join a group led by veterans C Andrew Bogut, G/F Gerald Henderson and F Thad Young, and complemented sophomores G Marcus Smart (the 4th pick in the 2014 draft) and C Lucas Nogueira, and 4th-year player Kent Bazemore, who will be asked to fill a bigger role after the departures of Crawford and Korver. With the 2.8M room exception still available, the team could add a couple more pieces to increase its depth.

The remaining question is:will the Hornets match the 4-years, maximum offer C Enes Kanter signed with the Memphis Grizzlies?

Kanter is still young and proved that he can produce when given minutes. Given his struggles on defense, though, will he gets enough minutes to justify a maximum contract? Also, the Hornets have already 2 players capable of starting at C in Bogut and Turner, with Nogueira on the wings. Would adding a 4th plain C, at maximum salary, make sense for the team?

Clock is ticking...

The Hornets are fielding offers for G Kent Bazemore. He is having a breakout season and would certainly help a contender.

Looking for a 1st round pick or good young players in return.
