Well the NHL does it like this:

Quote
23-man Roster
There may be a maximum of 23 players on each Club's playing roster at any one time from the commencement of the NHL regular season through the trade deadline.

I bring this up to discuss how very shallow the talent pool is in Free-Agency. There just isn't anything there. There is no way for well budgeted teams to even try to spend their way into contention. The way it is now there are top tier teams that are stacked liberally with stars while the rest of the league are doomed as perpetual bottom-feeders. Now, I'm a patient guy and willing to build my team through the draft but it will take years.....and years.

What I would like to see is a conversation about parity and what some small steps in that direction might look like. If for example we committed to a roster roll-back along with a possible cap roll-back we could inject a lot of talent into the Free-Agent pool at very little personal cost. Reducing roster size from 30 to 28 (.066%) along with a the same percentage ($4.6m) reduction to the cap would be ideal. However anywhere between a roster reduction of 4 and a cap reduction of zero should be seriously considered.

I write this for the health of the league as the gap between the top and the bottom is immense. From the perspective of 'new blood' that is taking on the challenge of 're-building' a franchise it doesn't take long to realize that a 're-build' actually isn't possible. For the bottom feeders here in Rebel we can only hope to build from the ground up. Again, that's okay if one is willing to invest 5 years or so but the reality is that (especially at the lower end) we'll just see a lot of GM's come and go.

Further to my note above I believe a roll-back on the minor-league cap is also in order.

:iatp: Ive only been here one year and the free agency is brutal for teams rebuilding.

You took some excellent steps last year by limiting the amount of cash put in deals at 4 million and got rid of teams adding prospects through free agency (IMO).

A lot of the bottom teams are veteran GMs so I don see that much of an issue. One issue I think that should be addressed:

-Teams signing players at discounts. I believe Backyard NHL had a rule where players could only be signed to an equal or greater contract than the last one . (If Player A made 4.9m in 2013-14 he must make 4.9m or more the next season if extended) Correct me if I'm wrong with this rule.

I think that could at least make for a more competitive free agency and give teams some more tougher decisions to make when extending players. Thoughts?

In Backyard Free Agency contracts must be equal to at least half the value of the current actual NHL salary......but there is nothing saying that new contracts extensions have to be larger than the previous ones.

With that clarification out of the way the l believe the point of your argument is that extensions should be pricier than they are as currently calculated. Reductions to both Cap Space (Major and Minor)and on Rosters would also have the effect of forcing some tougher decisions on GM's.

I have to agree that FA is pretty thin  :judge:

A side some exception like :

- Zuccarello
- Muzzin
- Benoit
- Jokinen
- Hudler
- Palat
- Bonino
- Reilly Smith
- Nyquist

For sure it is not enough to feed a 22 teams league ... Something as to be done but probably not this year .

My main goal is to have the 22 teams ready and competitive for the 2016-17 season when all the insane contract will be over . :judge:

So many change will happen until then to reach that goal .

Not sure how you are getting this list of 'exceptions'. Palat is signed through 2017. Really doubt any of that list actually makes it to Free Agency.

Aside from that, I hear what you are saying about running out the crazy contracts.....but I'd like to start talking about the steps that will be taken along the way.
