Contract?

Since you're new here I'll layout your options, the contract limits can be confusing:

1 year @ $20m
2 years @ $10m
3 years @ $6.7m
4 years @ $5m

You can't write a 5 year contract since the annual amount would be $4, which is less than the required salary for a 5 year deal.  You CAN however increase the total value to meet that 5 year deal requirement and write a $25m total contract (5 years at $5m).  That may not make much sense for you since you're already overpaying this player (you had to, and have the ability to, so I don't blame you).  It might make more sense to frontload this contract since you have so much cap freedom right now, so as not to handcuff yourself too far into the future.  Then again, you might have more players hitting 40GP in mind to sign this year and want to save some cap.  Your call.  Make sense?

Contract Limits
Except for any contract inherited in 2011, all contracts must be no longer than five years. Also, for a given salary, all contracts have term limits (max years contract can be per the yearly salary) as provided below.

Salary - Max Years
$5m+ - 5 years (the overall limit)
$3.5 to $4.9m - 4 years
$2 to $3.4m - 3 years
$0 to $1.9m - 2 years

I think what Rob was getting at was you could sign him for a $20M 1 year deal and then after this season use an extension to extend his contract at a value lower then $5M. If you did this you would get him cheaper in the next few years and use cap space you have this year that if you don't use this year will lose it forever.
