Extensions Clarification
« on: November 18, 2010, 02:27:47 AM »
You can extend a player over their value right. Like say you have to pay 3m but you want to pay 4m a season. This would mostly be used to up the amount of years of a contract.

Yup you can.  As long as they minimally get what they deserve.

When can we extend a player.. once his contract is up? In the last year of his contract (I think this is the best solution)? Whenever (I think this is a bad one)?

I'm ok with whenever.  It works in Fran GM.  Why do you think it's a bad one?

If you look at the Bergeron post, your essentially letting people renegotiate contracts whenever they like. I don't think that should be happening.

If instead you let people add to the end of expiring contracts, then you could theoretically sign a guy for as long as you want (10 stacking contracts for example)

If you only let people renegotiate in the last year of their deal (which is what usually happens anyway) both problems are avoided.

How can you cheat the system?  the player value is dictated and they amount of years is also dictated.  Player value is of the highest for the past two years to ensure you cant sign a guy cheaper.

theoretically why cant teams sign people over and over again?

Let me rephrase myself.

The way you set up the extensions:
I sign player a to a 5 year contract at 10mil per year. He really really sucks in year 1,2. So I "extend him" for a much cheaper price and don't need to worry about paying him 10mil.

The way me and dross thought things work (i.e. Extensions stack onto the end of this contract).

I extend a player at for 2 years. I extend a player for 2 years. repeat x 10. in the end you have a 20 year extension since they stack. Alternatively, I sign a player for 3 years at 1.5, but I think he will be worth alot more then, so I sign him for more and more extensions at his current (lower) value than it will be once he is in his final year and his value goes up.

I think the best way to do it is the 2nd method but only an extension in the final year. So he finishes his current contract and then a new contract kicks in which means he can't negotiate a new contract until his final year.

You cant sign a 10m player for 2 years, he has to sign for 5.  His player value dictates years.  If a team wants to take a chance on a young gun and sign him for 5 years they must give him at least a certain amount to qualify for 5 years.

Easy solution, contract extension cant be for less than prior contract.  Adding on is just a confusing matter.  Contract extensions take over immediately.

So if I sign a guy for a lot of money, but he starts to suck. I can sign him for less money as long as the contracts longer?

Contract $ value cant be less, not years

which means if you take a big contract your stuck because to sign him again itd be another 5 year contract.  if you sign a young gun for a big contract it could hurt you.  and contracts should always be allowed to be increased.
