actually, i think this rule needs interpretation since it states the yrs are "max." values for length and not that a team can't use a shorter contract length.

Contracts:
Except for any contract inherited in 2010, all contracts must be no longer than five years.  Also, for a given salary, all contacts (extension, FA) have term limits (max years contract can be per the salary) as provided below.

Maximum Years
<= $1.4m, 2 years
$1.5m - $5.4m, 3 years
$5.5m - $7.9m, 4 years
>=$8m, 5 years (the overall limit)

so it makes sense for FA bidding to use max values (since bids are for total value then chopped up into annual values).

however, for extensions it doesn't explicitly state contract length is obligatory.

example, in the NHL... you can sign a Zach Parise to an extension of 7.9m for 1yr ... reason to reduce risk of overspending and in case something happens to the player and the team wants to walk away from the extensive contract... vs getting stuck with a ball-n-chain contract like the Dipietro deal.

perhaps Rules Committee, joeshmoe and Drew can interpret this Max contract length for extensions?
