Edmonton Calls All-In With Montreal Goalie Swap

The Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens agree to a huge trade:

Edmonton Sends:
Michael Leighton, $1.6m (2011-2012)
Devan Dubnyk, $0.8m (2012-2013)
Both 2012 First Round Picks (EDM & FLA)

Montreal Sends:
Carey Price, $5.9m (2013-2014)

The Oilers feel that the only thing keeping them from making a run at the Stanley Cup this year is a starting goalie. This trade is a "Win now - screw the future trade". Edmonton picks up a top 5 goalie in the league for a huge cost, but such is the cost of winning!

Leighton was a cap dump and I needed to shed his salary to make this work.

Like getting the young Goalie in Dubnyk.my season has all but ended and the two 1st rounders help out.Hate losing Price but need help for the future.

great deal for EDM for the foreseeable future landing a great younger starter. Win to the Oilers.

not so sure Dubnyk is a high-end goaltending prospect but goalies that more time to mature so he could end up being a great goalie given his size. the 2 late 1st rounders are only going to help in 2-4 years so... and Leighton might pan out but as of now, he's buried in the minors. MTL does free up a little cap space for other moves in the off season.

This is a very nice trade for Edmonton landing a prized young goalie like Carey Price. I am jealous for sure.

Don't know if this necessary will improve Montreal in the future or present as goalies are at a premium but if Dubnyk turns out like I hope he does then this trade will be great for MON.
