New York Knicks Trade:
JaVale McGee $5.0m (2022)

Dallas Mavericks Trade:
Willy Hernangomez, $1.1m (2024) ( pay 1.1m in 2022, $0.6m in 2023, none in 2024)

After the trade New York Knicks release Willy Hernangomez with no cap hit. $1.7m buyout price minus $1.7m amount paid by others ($1.7m already paid by Dallas in 2022 and 2023).

Great creative talks resulted in the above trade. New York Knicks completes this trade to gain a roster spot and salary cap space to chase a backup PF behind Christian Wood. With Jarrett Allen, Mitchell Robinson, Nicolas Claxton, and Christian Wood at center, JaVale McGee would never get a chance to play so while he is a good backup C he won't ever accumulate any stats for me, while taking up cap space and a roster spot.

approves, i have still a big salary cap this year so the salary that i absorbed on this trade is just nothing.. and i need a help in my C so Mcgee gives me some of that help than hernangomez.

Soooo we're able to buy a player out of their contract then trade them?

I separated out the buyout into an additional step as I realize some of my wording was misleading.

Part 1
1) Dallas is paying part of Willy Hernangomez's salary in the trade. Dallas will pay $1.1m this year, $0.6m next year. That will count against his cap this year and next.

Part 2
2) After the trade I am buying out Willy Hernangomez, which is the buyout amount ($1.7m) minus any part paid by others ($1.7m). Thus a buyout with no cap hit to my team.

Two separate transactions, trade, then buyout, which are both listed so Billy can easily drop Willy vs. adding to my team and adding what is paid by others, then I submit an additional transaction and Billy has to delete everything he just added.

Trades with subsequent buyouts, drops, contract extensions along with them seem to be fairly normal, but my wording was confusing. Definitely trade with payment on player trading, then buyout by New York Knicks as a buyout by Dallas would have him taking the whole $1.7m cap hit this year.

Yes, this is allowed. It happens a decent amount where someone trades someone with money paid and then the receiving team drops that player. The money exchanged covers the buyout cost.
